DANGEROUS SPEED.

THE MAYOR TAKES ACTION. “ I laid this information, and it is my intention to claim witnesses’ expenses, in this, and every case of a similar nature, in which 1 appear. The money shall he handed to the Russian Famine Fund.” These remarks were made bv the Mayor (Dr H- T. J. Thacker, ALP.) at the Magistrate's Court this morning, when J;. 11. Levers edge was charged with speeding, and having no certificate of ability. In his evidence. Dr Thacker said that on December 25. at 12.25 p.m. he was in his car going along BeaJey Avenue at between fifteen and seventeen miles on hour, when the defendant’s car simply flew past in front of Lewisham Hospital. Witness and liis chauffeur estimated the speed to be between thirty and forty miles an hour. The ear did not slow down at the Colombo Street crossing, and he did not hear the horn sounded. It was a dangerous speed for traffic and an indecent speed for the city. Air H. M’ln tosh, city motor inspector, said tliat; there were far too many cases of this kind. On the. charge of speeding, the defendant was fined £5 and costs, and*on the other charge he was 1 convicted and ordered to pay costa, and tho Russian Famine Fund will receive 10h.
