The sudden death of Viscount Harcourt is announced. (Viscount Harcourt, son of the late William Haroourt-, was bora in 1863. and was created a viscount, in. 1916. He was Secretary of State for the Colonies, 1910-15; First Commissioner of Works, 1905-10 and 1915-17; and Liberal member of Parliament for the R-ossendale Division, Lancashire, 1904-17.) CAPTAIN BAIL-LIE. M.L.C. (Per Pres* Association.) WELLINGTON. February 35. The death lias occurred of Captain Baillie, M.L.C., at the age of ninetyfive years tßorn at Brunswick. Canada, )t( 1827. and educated at the Military School. Woolwich, Captain Baillie entered the British Army as an ensign of the 24th Foot Regiment at the age of nineteen, and went to India, where he served for six years. He was in the Punjab campaign of 184 S-9. and wa< in the battle of Chilean Wallah when his regiment was cut up by the Sikh army. In 1853 he returned to Englan i and was promoted to the rank of cap tain, in 1854. Coming to New Zealan 1 three years later in the Oriental, Captain Baillie settled at Wairau, wher*» ho had a run of 5000 acres. Later lie resided near Picton. During a portion of the forty years during which he wbi connected with the volunteer movement, Captain Baillie was colonel commandant of the Marlborough volunteer forces. Entering politics in 1861, ha was elected a member of the Marlborough Provincial Council, in which he sat until its abolition in 1876. He also Speaker of the Council for manv years, and second Superintendent “f the province in 1862-3. Captain Baßlie was appointed to the Legislative Council in 1961, and at tne death was its senior member. He held the position of chairman of committees for about thirty years.
