V/ANCANUI NOTES. (Special to the “ Star/') WANGANUI, February 21. The excellent acceptances received for the first day of the Wanganui Jockey Club's autumn meeting augurs well for the success of the gathering. With seventeen loft in for the Cup. the field promises to be one of the best ever saddled up, both numerically and from a quality point of view. The top weight. Amythas. stands his ground, and is likely to start a firm favourite, as he was responsible for a brilliant gallop this morning when he ran a mile in lmin 41sec, one of the finest performances ever put up here. He had Martial Dawn and Foo Chow as companions, all three having light boys up. though Amythas carried most weight. It was a flying start, Amythas being out wide in the centre of the track, and the other two close to the rails. So they raced right round. Martial Dawn and Foo Chow had a slight advantage, though apparently only on sufferance, until two furlongs from home, when Amythas ran up to them. Foo Chow hung on well in the run to the post, and the pair finished together, Martial Dawn being some distance back. Amythas covered a lot more ground than Foo Chow and looked to be doing it easily. The watches varied from lmin 40 4-ssec to lmin 41 2-ssec. Advance once ran a mile here in lmin -llsec. and Client did a shade worse, these being the fastest times ever done on the track. Amythas pulled up all right. It was a good gallop on Foo Chow's part, but he was being hunted along over the last half-mile, whereas the big fellow was going comfortably. Egotism finished well in front of Landslide at the end of a mil? from a flying start, the time registered being lmin 45sec. Vespucci joined in over the last three furlongs. finishing in front- of Egotism. Crueelle heat Warrawee over six furlong.-* on the plough, the last five taking lmin Thespian was too gdood for Zolande over half a mile, run in 49 4-seee. War Loa.n beat Khartoum once round on the plough. Trespass. Vagabond and Truthful did serviceable work. All are looking well, especially Truthful. It is said that Ngata has been doing splendid work at Marton, and his party are very confident. Rude is also in great trim, and is probably more fancied for the Cup than anything else except Amythas. Marqueteur is coming to hand to-day. Ho is reported us very fit. Kgmont Park is regarded as the most likely of the light weights. Tht fact- that Tamatete has been paid up for in the Flying is a relief to his many early backers. He has been freely-coupled with Amythas and liude. The Ilawlc has arrived and is looking well, while from all‘accounts Silver Link is in great nick. The Wanganui Trotting Club's meeting opens to-morrow, and gives indications of proving very successful. Only five are left in the Cup. for which Jack M’Kinney may be said to rule as favourite. lie has been lame since Sunday, but the trouble is supposed to be only muscle soreness. First Carbine is expected to-day, and should be handy at the finish. Lady Freda, Aeromaia, Lady Claris. Aranui, Loch Lomond are all expected to run well in their engagements. Mason says that Gloaming is none the worse for his long gallop on Sunday.
