THE KAITUNA AFFAIR.

trice admitted TO PROBATION. Oscar Trice, who attempted to discharge a gun at Miss Duncan at Kaituna, was brought before liis Honor Air Justice Adams in the Supreme Court to-day for sentence. The formal charge against him was that he attempted; to discharge a gun with intent to do grievous bodily harm. Air At'. J. Hunter, who appeared for him, said that ho was somewhat weak, but there was no danger from him. as he was not in the least a dangerous man. In any case, he would not return to Kaituna. Mr A. T. Donnelly (Crown Prosecutor) said that there was no reason to fear that the prisoner would threaten Miss Duncan again. Tt would be better to let him go back to Kaituna, if she was not thfere. His Honor said that it was undesirable for the prisoner to go back to Kaituna if Miss DuUcan was there. ATr Hunter said that the prisoner could get work at Meadowbank, and would have a good homo there. Tt was quite thirty or forty miles from Kaituna. His Honor said that the case had special circumstances. The lad evidently had a good disposition, and wished to improve himself. He would be admitted to probation for twelve months, on the special condition that he would refrain from visiting Kaituna or molesting Alisa Duncan. As he had been in custody for some time, no order for costs would be made against him.
