Tt is announced that any attempt to reduce wages at the Broken Hill Company’s steel works at Newcastle will bo resisted. (Tt was stated yesterday that the Broken Hill Proprietary Company’s steel works at Newcastle will be closed down unless a substantial reduction in wages is conceded. A 33 per cent cut was mentioned. Tt was alleged that the company was at present selling its products at the cost of production.) CLOSING OF STEEL WORKS. OFFER BY UNIONS. (Received January 23, 10-20 a.m.) ADELAIDE, January 25. With a view to obviating the directors enforcing their decision to close th© Wallaroo-Moonba Smelting Company’s mines owing to the unreipunerative cost of production, the unions have offered to come to an arrangement. The directors are considering the offer. (Owing to the continued depression of th© copper market, combined with the high cost of production, said a previous message, the Wallaroo-Moonba Smelting Company has announced that it is unable anv longer to continue its heavy financial losses and is closing down until the position improves. A largo number of men will bo rendered idle.)
