FOUR THOUSAND POUNDS.

DAILY RAILWAY DEFICIT. £From On* Correspondent.! WELLINGTON, January 17. The Acting Minister of Railways declared in the House to-day that the daily loss on the railways is £4OOO, and there is no prospect of making reductions of freights and fares. This course had been suggested by Mr Witty, the member for Rjccarton, who considered it .warranted on account of reductions in overseas freights and in the cost of living. He also thought trnffic might thereby bo stimulated. Mr Guthrie’s reply to the last suggestion was that it did not coincide with the Department’s experience. The position was serious, and although freights and fares were under consideration he did not see how they could possibly be reduced.
