A gathering of Sumner residents took place in the Council Chambers on Monday evening, when the Mayor (the Hon John Barr, AI.L.C.) presided over an attendance which included prominent residents and representatives of most of tho clubs and associations in tho borough. The meeting was held to congratulate the Rev W. M’Ara on celebrating his golden wedding. The Alayor, in an appropriate speech, congratulated the guest of the evening and referred to the high esteem in which both Mr and Airs Al'Ara were held throughout the borough. On behalf of those present he presented Air M’Ara with a purse of sovereigns, and in doing so wished him long life and health. Representatives of the various societies also spoke, tendering their congratulations, after which the recipient suitably responded. The gathering was brought to a close by the singing of “ For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.”
