CONSTABLE ASSAULTED.
TWO AI EX CHARGED, _ | (Per Phf.ss Association.) TIM ABU, November 14. Air E. D. Aides!ev, S.M., concluded to-day the bearing of a charge against two young men. Kerr and Walsh, of j assaulting Constable Fisher on night duty at 2 a.m. on Octuber 23. Air Hanlon, of Dunedin, defended accused. The charge was of unprovoked assault. The defence suggested that the. constable bad previously challenged Kerr to fight and did so that night. Both accused swore that the constable attacked Kerr first. The constable and a young man named Hall, who happened to be with him. swore that Kerr attacked tli© constable, Walsh looking on 1i!l Kerr was down, when he interfered, and Hall went for another constable. Constable Fisher said ho was kicked in tho face and elsewhere and a doctor corroborated this evidence. The Magistrate decided that accused were not to bo believed. He. sent Kerr to gaol for two months with hard labour and fined AValsh £lO. The case aroused a good deal of interest.
