CARNIVAL WEEK.
TRAFFIC ON THE TRAMS. The folio-wing were the tramway traf- ; ice receipts for all Hues for Carnival IVeek, the figures for the corresponding days last year being also shown:— ;
The weather last year was wet on the Wednesday, Friday and the last | clay of the races, whereas this year it : was showery on Monday only and dull on Wednesday. This year Show "Day was a record one for any day since the inception of the tramway system, al- ! though the figures for the whole week show a decrease of £lO as compared with last year. Reporting on the Carnival Week traffic at yesterday’s meeting of the Tramway Board, the general manager made the following remarks:—“ When special cars with special fares are run on the same route at the same time as i timetable cars with ordinary fares, the j congestion on the timetabio cars is i very great. It may interest the much j harassed daily passenger to know that I cars and power plant are held idle for I a greater part of the year in order to j copo with carnival traffic. It is dcsir- i able, therefore, that the daily tram i passenger should not he required to j carry the financial burden, but that the ; carnival people for whom it exists : should pay.' Hence special fares. If, i however, owing to timetable car con- j gest.ion the ordinary service was supplementedj still greater numbers would : lie attracted by the ordinary laro car. and the whole special system would | break down. I wish to record the good ! work done by the traffic staff during 1 the week. Despite the heavy traffic ! there were no unavoidable delays that • lam aware of. and uo accidents. Car j defects were hardly in evidence. A j trailer with draw-bar pulled out on 1 Show Day held matters up for a. short ; time, but the traffic officials cleared the way promptly. The power staff, too, managed the over-taxed plant well. ’ The chairman (Mr S- A. said j that everything had worked very j smoothly during Carnival Week, and \ much credit was due to the traffic j staff. He also thought the police j should be thanked for the assistance they had given the board’s officials in handling the traffic. A report by the general manager dealing with die control of the public | and of the traffic at the trotting ' grounds was referred to the Works and Traffic Comm ittee. On the motion of the chairman, the board passed a hearty vote of thanks to the staff for the able manner in wljich they had handled the traffic. The chairman said the members of the hoard appreciated the difficulties that the staff had to contend w ith owing to the limited amount of rolling stock available.
