It is said of an applicant who wanted to join one of Sir Ernest Shockieton’s expeditions that he called at the office thickly gloved and muffled and carrying an umbrella. After giving; some particulars regarding; himself, _he asked in his turn for particulars of the expedition and zone to -which it was voyaging. “ Fearfully cold!” ho was told. “ Scenery, all ice ! Nothing to commend it- Not a place you’d visit for pleasure. Freezing ears, numb hands, icy feet ” The description had the desired effect. The applicant rose hastily and walked to the window. “ ! T don’t think I’ll go with you,” he said. ‘‘ I think it’s going to rain!” And. seizing hi- umbrella, he fled
