SWIMMING.

LOCAL AND GENERAL NOTES.

(By

“ NATATOR.”)

Tlie first swimming carnival of the season was held at the Tepid Baths last Thursday evening. Good entries were received for all events, and every race was keenly contested. The handicapping was exceptionally well done, especially as the season had just begun and there were no previous performances to go by. The effortß of some of the girl swimmers were noteworthy, especially E. Hannan, of the East Christchurch School, whose pace through the water was too fast for her opponents in the relay race. Miss Mather also deserves mention, as she swam 66 2-3yds in 52sec, which is good time for a young girl. Mr H. Williams, who was recently elected president of the Canterbury Centre of the N.Z.A.S.A.. is well known in swimming circles throughout New Zealand. He is a member of the East Christchurch Swimming Club, and at its last annual meeting was elected president. He was an interclub swimmer for a number of years, and a member of the East Christchurch Harris Cup team once. He has been associated with the East Christchurch Club for the past fifteen years, and has held every office in the club. He has represented Auckland on the New Zealand Council, and saw active, service in the war. He has taken a very keen interest in all matters appertaining to swimming, and his recent appointment is a- very popular one. His activities have not been confined to swimming, as he represented New Zealand in Australia as an athlete. Mr Williams was manager for Duke Kahanamoku in his tour through New Zealand. Miss Ruby M’Grath has passed the award of merit test. She is a member •of the Christchurch Ladies* Swimming Club. A grand carnival will be held at theTepid Baths on show night, commencing at 7.45 p.m. Tlie carnival will b > under the auspices of the United Club, and, as there will be a largo number of visitors in town, it should prove a great success. She was actually in the water 63hr 3 niiri. The best nrevious record was eleven days. The swimmer was accompanied by a launch and a rowboat, and she remained in the water from six in the morning until eleven at night. _On September 25, at New York, Charlotte Boyle set a world’s record for 220vds of 2 min 4< 2-osec. as comiiared with the former mark of 2min 53sec, made by Ethelda Btcibtrey in Australia this year.
