The Breeze was docked yesterday morning for cleaning and painting. She will be refloated again on Saturday or Monday. The Storm is due back from Wanganui on Saturday and should sail the same evening for Dunedin. The Calm arrived from Dunedin. via Timaru, yesterday morning, and after exchanging her cargo sailed last evening for Picton, Wellington and Wanganui. The Kaino is due at Wellington to-day. and at Lyttelton on Tuesday. The Kaitangata is due here from .Wellington to-morrow. She is bringing Melbourne cargo. The Kanna. from Dunedin via Timaru. is due here on Tuesday to load for New' Plymouth. Wellington and Greymouth. She will also call at Wellington on her trip north. The Kaitoke w’ill complete her discharging to-day. and in all probability will be tied up alongside the Kauri until the demand for shipping improves. The Katoa sailed for Dunedin yesterday afternoon, where, after completing her unloading, she will proceed to Port Chalmers for overhauling. PERSONAL. Captain Robertson, of the Calm, has gone on holida.y leave, Captain Nicholson is relieving him. OVERSEA SHIPPING. The 8.8. and A. liner Matakana is expected at Wellington on November 9 from Auckland to continue discharge of her cargo from Home. She will subsequently visit Lyttelton and Port Chalmers to complete discharge. The Federal Line has received advice that the Sussex, eh route from New Yprk to New Zealand porta, continued her voyage from Panama on October 19. The Shaw, Savill and Albion Company's liner Athenic, which left Wellington on September 23 for Southampton, continued lxer voyage from Colon on October 17. The TJ.S. and A. liner Eastern Morn was to have left New York about October ‘2l for Wellington. Lyttelton, Bluff and Australian ports. The Canadian Pioneer is expected at Auckland on Saturday from Montreal. She is due at Wellington about November 12. The Tainui is expected to leave Auckland to-morrow for Lyttelton. The Opua will be dispatched for Greymouth to-day with general cargo. The Polshannon is due to-day from Singapore, via Wellington, with 17,400 cases of benzine for discharge. She is expected to sail on Saturday for the south. The Port Bowen, which left Wellington on September 17, arrived at London on October 29. The question of a light on the Three Kings, which was taken in hand by shipmasters and others several years ago (says an exchange), is being revived. A committee of shipmasters was appointed about nine years ago to collect information and to prepare a report upon the subject, hut owing to the war the matter has remained in abeyance. The report of the committee is to be submitted to a meeting of shipmasters and officers. OIL VERSUS COAL. *n interesting vessel now in Australian waters is the United States and Australian Line steamer Easterner. The steamer, which is on her maiden voyage to Australia, was one of the vessels built in Japan during the war, for the United States Government in exchange for Hteel. She was subsequently handed over to the United States Shipping Board as the Seifuku Maru, and employed in the cargo trade between New York and South African porta. When the United States and Australian Line decided not to run oil-burning steamers in the Australian trade, the steamer was taken over by the line and placed on the Australian run in place of the Nishmaha. She was given her present name by her new owners. Some idea of th.m *n<rrtnons expense of running oil-burning steamers to Australia from New York was given by Captain R. O. O'Brien, master of the Easterner. who stated that when he last visited Melbourne as master of the Nishmaha the company had to pay £ls a ton for oil fuel, whereas coal was now only costing 80s per ton Oil-burning steamers consumed about thirty tons of oil a day, he said, and heavy losses had been sustained on Reveral voyages of American steamers to Australia. With conl-burning steamers, however, the fuel feili was considerably less.
