CITY AND SUBURBAN NOTES, (By “ COVEE-POIKT. 1 ') The conclusion of tbe first round of the City and Suburban Association’s competitions ou Saturday left Greens and Letter Carriers in tbe lead with three points each, while Railway are one point behind. AH the matches ended in decisive victories for the winmug team?, and there is no doubt that they are the three strongest, while Paparua, St Albans and AYoolston are infinitely weaker. Matches between any two of the latter three will be more interesting than any of the opening games. In the next round, which commences on November 12, Letter Carriers meet Greens, and this match should be one of the best. Woolston -Mill journey to Hornby to play Paparua and. both teams being fairly equal, the match should be a close one. Railway should defeat St Albans by a fair margin at Sydenham Park as in’ all probability their bowling will be strengthened by W. Bates. ST ALBANS v. GREENSThe wickets on Saturday were a distinct improvement upon the previous week, but the batting at. St Albans Park, where Greens met St Albans, Aras very poor, and the game became dull and uninteresting. One or two of the St Albans players started batting very stylishly, but could not restrain their anxiety to make runs, and they invariably lost their wicket through foolish strokes. H. French and G. Robertson, the two not out men for Greons, resumed their innings, but the partnership was broken when two runs had been added, Robertson succumbing to Lscott. Dougall opened with some nice strokes to the off, but the St Albans fielding was good and few fours were registered. After making a two and a couple of singles Dougall lifted one to Carrington, who brought off a neat catch. French was

ba.tting with his accustomed caution and his score of 16 not out was mad© up of singles. Neither Judson nor La very troubled the'bonders, and as Duggan was incapacitated the team batted on© ruao short. The innings closed for 105. Only two of the seven St Albans bowlers bad any success. R Winter secured the best- average with five wickets for 25 runs and S. TCscott thro© for 16. Tbe fielding of St Albans Avas fairly good and few chance© were missed- With the completion ol tbe first inning© the match was practically decided, as 'St Albans had no time to make up the deficit and anything approaching a. respect-able totalHowever, their effort was little better than their first innings. Shrimp ton beaded the snores Aviih U , and be and Carrington made the best stand of the inniuss. C. "Winter wa* shaping well and was unlucky in being caught off a good leg hit. RAILWAY v. WOOLSTON After reaching the century at a. loss of five wickets Railway’s batting became feeble, and only 27 runs were added for the remaining five wickets. Clements was last, man in, and be* livened up the innings for a spell, adding 15 runs before being bowled bv Worrall. AYoolston made a fair stand in their second attempt, mainly by the efforts of Peacock and Riddalls, both of whom Atent for tile bowling. Sixes became fairly frequent, and 136 were on tho !x>nrd when the last wicket fell. Six wickets w-ere down for 50 when these two became associated, and the partnership yielded 52 runs before being broken. Both scored the some number of runs. 43. but Peacock was tho more vigorous. Peacock finished the match with n total ol 93 runs, being 50 not cut in the first innings and 43 in t-h» second. J- Stevens secured most- wickets in AV■ cols ton s second innings, with fn r e for 33, and H. Clark got two for 37. 1 No competition matches will be played on Saturday next.
