Railway electrification on a big scale, bused cm Government assistance iu finding the necessary capital, is the topic of the hour in connect Sou with unemployment. It is hoped that the Government will guarantee interest on the schemes which include £10.000.000 for tho Great Eastern, £6.000.000 for underground extensions and £5,000,000 for the South Eastern and £5,000,000 for Indian railways. Other railways are preparing au extensive scheme, which will speed up the Metropolitan Railways thirty per cent and it is estimated will save every worker ten working days annually, which otherwise would be spent on railway trains. The scheme will necessitate new rolling stock and thus create employment iu factories in tho north of England and Scotland. About sixty per cent of tlio outlay will go in labour and forty per cent on raw materials.
