PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH.

NOVELTY FAIR AT LAURIBTON. One of the biggest functions ever held in Lauriston took place on Thursday, when a novelty fair in aid of the funds of the Laurjeton Presbyterian Church was held in the railway grain shed. The building presented a very gay scene during the afternoon and evening. Round the walls were tho various stalls, with their bright decorations and laden with a varictv of goods to tempt all comers. The festive appearance was greatly enhanced bv bunting lent by Mr TV. Patching and electric light installed by Mr S. Osborne. In spite of a thunderstorm early in the afternoon, followed by frequent heavy showers of ram. there was a very large attendance, lhe opening ceremony was performed at 2 p.m. by Mr TV. Carr (chairman of the Mount liutt. Road Board). The Rev A. S. Morrison (Rakaia), Mr If. L. Crotkers (chairman of the local School Committee) and Messrs TV. Goodwin and 0. Prebble also gave short speeches. Those in charge of the various departments were:—Farm produce—Messrs TV. Goodwin and G. Lilley. Home produce Mrs Hickman and Misses Gemmell and Hooper. Tea stall- Mesdamos W. Goodwill. W. M Phail, C. Prebble and G. Lilley. Fruit and sweets—Misses E. Bryant, V. Goodwin. W. Goodwin aud E. Miles, and Master Cecil Prebble. Soft drinks and ice cream—Misses M. and N. Goodwin. Flowers and pot plants —Misses I. Cunningham. TV. Prebble. M. Penney and L. M'Phail. Fruit salad - Misses M. Prebble and T. Bland. Jura bio stall and work stall—Mesdames Cunningham. Jacobs and Norrish. Post office--Misses Gunn and Jacobs. Art gallery— Messrs A. M’Tvay and E. Norrish. Children's fish pond—Miss Gates. Cookery competitions—Miss Killner. Shooting gallery— Mr T. Gray. Various entertaining competitions were held, under the direction of Mesdames TV. Letliam, Bennett and Crothors, MisSes K. Cunningham, Norrish, V. M’Phail and M. Maidens, and Messrs R. Lethnro and S. Lomou. Messrs TV. Letbaro, G. Maidens, Cretnev and Fisher also assisting. Groat, interest was taken in a tug-of-war competition held during the evening. Hix teams entered, the winning team being Lyndhurst A, consisting of Messrs J. Davidson, sen.. F. Thompson. R. Fleming. TV. Beattie and T. Ross, captained by J. Davidson, jun. This competition was under th.; direction of Messrs 11. M’Elrea (judge). P. Cookson (timekeeper •. W. Page (Starter) A. Audersou and H. Sarney (referees). Tho other competing teams were:— Lyndhurst B. Lauriston A and B. Mitcham (ft'. M'Phail’s team) aud Rakaia (Tattcrsoa'a team). A Cookery competition for girls was also held, Mesdames Prebble and Bland acting an judges. The following were the prizewinners : Girls under 11— .Sponge sandwich (nine entries)—lrene Bishop 1, Lena Letharn 2. Marion Let-ham special. Madeira cake (l) —Barbara Donaldson 1, Hetti© Sharplin (J. Girls, 11 to 18.—Sponge sandwich <S)— Miss Winnie Goodwin 1, Misses Mildred Cretney and Annie Scott (equal) 2. Plate of paltry (3)—Miss Winnie Goodwin 1, Miss Lily M'Phail 2. Seed cake M ■ -Miss Winnie Goodwin 1, Miss Nell Goodwin 2. Winners of other competitions were:— Judging weight of sheep, Messrs A. Maidens and S. Merry (equal); judging weight of cake, Mrs Orothers; nail-driving for ladies. Miss I. Bland: bed-making for men, Messrs Cookson and Luckie. A beautifully dressed bride doll was won hy Mr Osborne; doll in cradle, by Master R. DaD.ell; cake, by Miss V. M’Phail; and the children's cake by Master Forrest Letham. Towards the close of the evening nil unsold goods were disposed of by Mr A. Anderson. Much of the success of the fair was due to the capable and energetic work of Mr 0. Prebble. organiser and chairman of committees.
