SUB-SOIL DRAINAGE.

'REQUEST FROAI ST ALBANS. A large deputation of St Albans residents waited oil the Drainage Board last evening in connection with the proposed sub-soil drainage system. Mr H. H. Holland said that residents in the block between Francis Avenue and Flockton Street, and in the block between Fitzgerald Street and Barbadoes Street, were willing to pay for a system of sub-soil drainage, provided it were carried out under the supervision of the board. People in Riccarton were making a similar request. The chairman of the board (Air IT. J. Otley) said that new sewers to be laid down in part of St Albans would take away a lot of the surface water. Air Holland said lie quite believed that. At the same time he thought that, provision for drainage should be made in all subdivisions, and that it should be the duty of some public body to see that this provision was made. Tho system now advocated was well worth the cost. It would ease the drains in flood-time and it would allow residents to help themselves. Mr R. D. Alartin said that residents of Flockton Street felt that it would be better to have the work done under the supervision of the board than to have it done singly, house by house. Tf the system were put in hand it would give work for unemployed at full rates of pay. The matter was important for people in the suburbs, and he hoped the board would treat it sympathetically. Air S. A. Staples suggested that the residents concerned might form themselves into a Land Drainage Board. There was a body of that kind at Leeston. Air Otley : They are offering to find the money. They can’t do much more. Mr Staples : Tho question is, have wo the power? Mr Holland said that residents had full confidence in the board. Air Otley said that something had to be done in the Sfc Albans district. The deputation’s request would receive every con sideration. The hoard resolved that the engineer should report on the matter and give those who wished it what assistance he could.
