Mr* Preston came up from Oamaru last night. Mr and Mrs T. E. Sutherland left for Invercargill this morning. Mr* Barnard Tripp came tip this morning from Timaru. Mrs M. A. Brown arrived in Christchurch from Sydney this morningOverseas visitors at Warner’s are Mr and Mrs A. S. Vavra, from Tasodona, California. Mr and Mrs A. Morrison (Dunedin) arrived from the north this morning, and are staying at the Clarendon. Mr and Mrs Hurst, who are down for the Shirley golf tournament, ar© staying at the Federal. Mr and Mrs Ranger have arrived from Auckland for the golf tournament at Shirley, and are staving at the Federal. Miss T. M’Kechnie (Dunedin), who has been spending a. day or two at the Clarendon, goes on for a holiday at Hanroer to-night. Mr and Mrs F. Wilson arrived at the United Service last night, with their little daughter, and will return to their home in Wellington to-night. Visitors at the Clarendon for the Shirley golf tournament are Mrs Moon, and her sister, Mrs Adams, from Blenheim. Towards the end of the Heretaunga golf tournament Mrs B. B. Wood gave a Indies’ partv to meet her Excellency Viscountess Je'llice. among the guests being Mrs J. E. Donald, Alesdanies Strang, Bidwill, M’Kellar, Tv. Webster. John Stevenson. Andrae, Godby, Kingscote, Eric. Harper, Miss Johnson and Miss Clark. Lady Jellicoe, who was attended by Captain Southey, shook hands with all the ladies present, and a very pleasant hour was spent in tea and chat. A very pleasant function took place at the close of the recent golf tournament at Heretaunga. when the retiring secretary, Airs Alellsop, who had devoted fifteen years honorary service to the club, was presented by this year’s champion, Mrs Guy Williams, with a handsome purse of sovereigns, subscribed to by all affiliated clubs in both islands. The presentation was so entirely unexpected, that Airs Mellsopp could only make a short and feeling reply. Miss Greta Ewing, of Wellington, was then elected secretary to the club. At last evening’s meeting of the Christchurch Division of the St John Ambulance Brigade Miss Johnson, who has been lady superintendent on probation for the past three months was elected to the position permanently by members of the division. A further election was held to fill the position of treasurer and resulted in the return of Miss E. J. England. During the meeting the lady district superintendent gave an interesting address on “The Illnesses of Children.” Her remarks proved v©ry instructive and she was accorded ti hearty vote of thanks. Recently a. kitchen evening was given at the home of Air and Airs Janies AlacGibbo*** Aotea,” Chester Street, in honour of Miss Irene Boyce, whoso marriage is to take place shortly.' A very enjoyable time was spout in music and dancing. Much amusement was caused by the opening of the many useful gifts received by the gu?st of the evening. Last Saturday members of the Welsh Society spent a very pleasant evening at the Cadena. Alusical items were contributed l>y the following : Aliss R. Jones, Alessrs Coe, Temple and Roberts (songs) and Airs Temple (recitations). Aliss Ooe and Air Parry were the accompanists. A clever competition, entitled “A Bong Wedding ” was held for a prize donated by Mrs Hugh Williams. After supper dancing and games concluded n very jolly evening. Those present included Mesdames Bowden. Hamber, Deans, Williams, Roxburgh, Walters, Johns, Per re! and Temple, Alisses Freebury, Coe, R. Jones, File, Gibson, Roxburgh. Tlie Grocery Exhibition held in London in August last* had one novel and very interesting feature, *a new method of cake decoration. It is done with fine brushes on a background of Alarzipan icing sugar, all sorts of different subjects being taken. A beautiful reproduction iof a country scene—skaters on a lake, with snow-laden trees in the background. A portrait, even so difficult a subject as “ The Laughing Cavalier,” being faithfully depicted ; some of Turner’s pictures— Venice Florence, in all the glow of their wonderful green, orange and yellow. A chef d’ceuvre was a medal in sugar and chocolate of the Queen Victoria, memorial which stands in front of Buckingham Palace. What is wonderful is that the gilt which is used in many of the paintings is edible. One exhibitor had a wonderful Christmas pudding on view, made to go on a long journey, for it was intended to lx? eaten in due timo at the South Pole by members of the Shackleton Expedition. The To Koa Club held its annual ball in the Beckenham Hall. In spite of the inclement weather there was a large attendance and a merry time was spent The hall was tastefully decorated with royal blue and gold streamers, interspersed with huge caskets of spring flowers, while the supper room looked a mass of bright colours. Hanging from all angles of the ceiling were vari-coloured streamers which almost reached the tables, meeting large bowls of spring flowers. AYells’s orchestra supplied the music. There were some very pretty frocks worn and among those present were Alesdames AVhite, Adams and Can son : Alisses T. Smart. Campion (2), G. Jones, R. Hodge. AI. Smart, E. AVhite, Af. Kingsland, R. Tilly, Truscott, K. Campion, Chamberlain, Swarbrick, Severage and Glee. A very enjoyable evening was spent recently, at the residence of Mrs A f Jenkins, Riverbank. Kimberley, which took the form of a welcome home. About thirty young people were present. Owing to the weather in the early part of the evening being very unsettled a large number who intended to he present were unable to attend. The host and hostess placed the drawing-room at the party’s disposal. The evening was devoted to music and games. The following contributed:—‘Messrs D. Smith, A. Smith. Howell. Glover, Spooner, Lorkhead and Woods; step dance. Mr AV- Lockhead ; bagpipe selections, Air Howell ■ instrumental selections. Air A. Smith. During the interval the host and hostess provided a dainty supper. Among those present were:—Alesdames AI. Jenkins. H. McClelland and Alisses Al’Clelland (3), Messrs AJ. Johnston. AI. Jenkins, Stott, Roper, Laing. Stanley, Carley, Allsopp, Robertson and Al’Alcekan. Three hearty cheers were given for the host and hostess. The singing of ‘' For They Are Jolly Good Fellows ” and “ Auld Lang Syne ” brought a very pleasant evening to a close. Ballantyne’s Luncheon and Rooms, open daily from 10 a.m.. are proving immensely popular. while the lounge has established itself as an ideal haven of rest.
