ALDEBARAN AT AKAROA
REMAINS TILL SUNDAY, (Special to “ Star.”) AKAROA. October 14. The French sloop Aldcbaran arrived here at 12.30 to-day. The Mayor (Mr G. Armstrong), with n party of residents, went on board and extended a hearty welcome to the visitors. The ship will remain here until Sunday. For the benefit of Ihe officers and men a programme of sports and a dance has been drawn up, as well as a motor trip along the Summit Road. The Aldcbaran is commanded by Cap*, tain cle Sol miniha e. She will go to Dunedin, and from there to Australia and Tahiti. She has on hoard fourteen or fifteen French soldiers who are on their way to join the garrison at Tahiti. The Aldcbaran is the only French warship stationed in the Pacific. She arrived in New Zealand waters from New Caledonia. Th<l Aldcbaran was iu Auckland in January. 1921). when Lieutenant Guierre. a wireless expert, was engaged in conducting experiments in wireless telegraphy. It was then ascertained that France and New Zealand, being almost at the antipodes of each other, the facilities for the reception of signals between, the two countries were remarkably increased. The Aldcbaran actually succeeded in communicating with Lyons and Bordeaux.
