Mr and Mrs C H. Ensor, of Whiterock, arc in town for a few days. Mr and Mrs J. Hyde (Langridge) are staving at the ClarendonMias I>. J. Galbraith (Greymouth) arrived in Christchurch yesterday*. Mrs I>ickinson and Miss Smith arrived In town from Ashburton last nightMr and Mrs W. Jones, who have been staving at the Clarendon, are returning to Invercargill to-day. Mrs and Miss E. B. Milne, of Dunedin, came to town yesterday and will remain a few days. Mr and Mrs C. D. Dunnatt, of St Andrews, came into town yesterday and are staying at the United Service. Captain and Mrs John Barker, of Geraldine, are expected back from England next week. Miss F. Phillips, of the Point, has been staying with Mrs Edgar Stead at Ilam, Riccarton. Miss Caley-Robinson. Merivale, is staying with her sister, Mrs A- Young, nt Napier. , slr and Mrs J. W. Nolan, Gisborne, accompanied by their daughter, have been spending a few days in Christchurch. Mrs T. Young (Wellington) who has been on a tour of the West Coast, together with Miss B. Stewart, of London, England, arrived . yesterday in Christchurch. At to-day's meeting of the North Canterbury Hospital Board the resignation of Nurse Crawford, staff nurse at the Coronation Hospital, was accepted with regret. Mrs H. Begg and Miss Henderson left For Wellington last evening to attend the National Council of Women’s Conference, which is being held this week. They are taking up with them two largely signed petitions, which will shortly be presented in the House. On Monday evening a pleasant surprise dance was held at the home of Mrs E. Ellyett, in Edward Avenue, St Albans. Amongst those present were: Misses Mona Ellyett, Olivo Round, Maisie Macandrew, Pearl Baxter, Rona and D. Jenkin, N. Bassett, D. Jackson and Reidle (8), Messrs Ted Macandrew, Jack Batchelor, Ray Anderson, Rex Cunnible, C. Lythe, S. Ellyett, R. Batchelor, Jack Shier and Jenkin. The following passengers arrived by the ferry steamer yesterday morning Mr and Mrs Rothschild, Miss Mandl (Eketahuna), Mr and Mrs Hansen, Mr and Mrs Ferris and child (Wanganui), Mrs Timbrell, Mr and Mrs Kingland, Mr and Mre Plimsoll (Gisborne)), Mrs Baird. Mrs Crawford (Akaroa), Mrs and Miss Caro, Mrs Nye, Mrs Bennett, Mrs Allen, Mr and Mrs Pearce, Mr and Mrs Wade, Mrs Steele, Miss Wells, Mr and Mrs Longton, Mr and Mrs M’Coy. A social and dance was held on Friday evening in the packing room of the Superbus Packing Cornpan3'’s factory in Madras Street. The event was held jointly to celebrate the opening of the company’s new buildings and also to welcome home from South Africa Mr and Mrs M’Laren, old friends of the managing director, Mr H. Stiles. The largo room was lavishly decorated with coloured lights, drapings and streamers of royal blue and orange. About seventy persons participated in the dancing, the music being supplied by Wells’s orchestra. Supper was served in the storeroom, the tables being prettily decorated, credit for which was due to the Misses Cooper, Kingsland and Coleman. Dancing was kept up till the earlj r hours of the morning. Songs were supplied by Misses Cooper (2) and Orapper, and Mr A. Aislabu.
