A Press Association message from Wellington states that in reference to the cable from Ottawa stating that the “ Grand Lodge Oddfellows Bitting at Toronto rejected the motion of Mr Lucas (Australia) to amend the constitution to permit the admission or Maoris,” tho Grand Secretary of the Manchester Unity Oddfellows’ Lodge states that this does not apply to that order which never exempted the Maoris from membership if they were eligible in accordance with the rules. There are Maoris in New Zealand lodges and they are entitled to all the benefits and privileges of membership. The secretary of the Unemployment Committee (Mr T. Drummond), states that while the unemployed position has not grown materially worse, tho degree of distress among those unemployed has become much more acute. This is especially applicable to married men with families. Mr Drummond emphasises the effect which would be made upon the situation if five hundred citizens each gave a day’s gardening, or provided work which would earn a day s wages.
