LINCOLN ROAD FATALITY. LLOYD IN DOCK. Tlie hearing of a charge of manslaughter against Archibald Lloyd, taxi-driver, thirt.y-one years of age, was begun in the Magistrate’s Court this morning before Mr Wvvern Wilson, S.M. Bub-Inspector W. Iv. Simpson represented the polioe, and Mr J. Godfrey appeared for the accused, who pleaded not guilty. Tho formal charge was :— £! That on August 13 at Christchurch, then having in his charge and under his control a motor-car in Lincoln Road, which in fcbo absence of precaution or care might endanger human life, did omit, without lawful excuse, to perform his legal duty to take reasonable precautions against and use reasonable care to avoid such danger, and, in consequence of such omission, he did cause tho death of one Kathleen Mary Archer, thereby committing manslaughter.” Dr C. J. Campbell said that tho girl Archer was brought to the Christchurch Hospital on tho evening of August 13. She succumbed to her injuries shortly after admission. A few minutes later, Lloyd spoke to witness, pointing out where his car had been damaged. Sub-Inspector Simpson: What, was Lloyd’s condition?—His faculties were influenced by drink, but I would not consider him a drunken man. He walked quite steadily. He was not able to giro a clear account of the accident. He made some statements which were disconnected. What was his appearance?—His face was flushed and liis eyes were congested. His appearance was consistent with anxiety of mind. Further hearing was adjourned till next Wednesday, bail being allowed as before.
