OPIUM SMOKING CHARGE.
A CHINAMAN IM COURT. Ching Jen, an elderly Chinaman, was charged at the Magistrate’s Court today, before Mr S. E. M’Carthy, S.M., with smoking opium on September 3, and further wit-li having opium in his possession in a form suitable for smoking. Air E. W. White, who appeared for the accused, asked that the case might Stand down for a week. The accused had only been served with the warrant the previous night, and he had not had time to prepare his defence. There were certain merits about the case in accused’s favour. Senior-Sergeant Kelly said the accused was a stranger to Christchurch and there was, of course, a possibility that he might run away. His Worship: Was lie arrested or served with a summons? Senior-Sergeant Kelly: He was served with a summons. His Worship; Well, in that case, he can’t be remanded. Mr White said there was no chance of accused running away. He was. out of work at present and intended to remain in Christchurch. The Magistrate adjourned the case for a week on condition that the accused reported to tho police ouce every day.
