POSITION STILL SERIOUS. MGPLAKS FIRED UPON. By Telegraph —Press Association—Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Press Association. (Received August 27, 8.50 a.m.) DELHI, August 25. In connection with tho Moplah disturbances the Malabar district has been proclaimed a military area. Magistrate Batty and an armed force while proceeding to Pattaradi met a crowd of Moplahs, whom they warned to keep off the railway under penalty of shooting. The crowd continued to advance, whereupon orders were given to tire with Lewis guns. The casualties are unknown, but it is believed that they are heavy. Batty’s force returned to Shoranur, and later proceeded to Cotaparam, where the Moplahs threatened to attack. Yesterday tho Moplahs attacked the Cherapolacherv Police Station and destroyed the record*. They burned the sub-treasury at Periatalamanua and looted £BOOO. Other similar outrages have occurred elsewhere. The population was not molested, but consternation prevails.
