SUMNER RIPPLES.
EVENTS OF THE WEEK. [From Ou r Correspondent.] HOME NURSING. Tho first of the series of this course of lectures will take place iu the committee room next Wednesday evening., when a vote will be taken as to which future night is most convenient to the majority of the members. There are some three thousand persons living in Sumner and Redcliffs, with all of whom it is manifestly impossible to come in touch. Yet without doing this, it has been difficult to fill up tho roll. Thanks are due to Mr E. A. Johnson for his taking charge of both the list and the books on home nursing, a copy of which should be obtained by all members without delay. LIFE SAVING. A special meeting of the Life Saving Club was held this week, when it was decided to bring before the annual meeting the necessity of securing for the club its true function, that of assistance in the surf. With that end in view, it is possible that a much higher fee will be charged to those members who join for the sake of the bathing only. The need for dressing accommodation for ladies was further discussed, and it is hoped something substantial in the way of separate rooms may be devised in the near future. THE GOLF CLUB. The ball given by the Richmond Hill Golf Club this week was one of the most successful held iu the Town Hall. It was the first promoted by the club, and proved so popular that it is sure to become an annual fixture. The decorations, the music and the supper were perfect, and the comfort and enjoyment of those present were fully provided for by the committee, which consisted of Mrs C. H. Hamilton, Airs A. Rattray, Miss K. Selby, Miss L. Martin, Miss F. Hamilton, Miss 11. Leithead, Miss D. Jamieson and Messrs J. D. Lawrence, N. Iv. Smyth, TV. Jamieson, W. E. Earnshaw, R. E. H. Whifccorabe, T. C. Evans and Major R. A. Row. SUMNER SCHOOL. A special meeting of the sub-cora-mittee was held this week, the chairman (Mr G. A. Alexander) presiding. The chairman reported that the Christchurch Banjo Band, under the direction of Mr Louis Bloy, had arranged to come down to Sumner on September 21. On account of the popularity of the last concert, and in order that purchasers of a. ticket should secure n. seat it was decided to arrange bookings with Mrs Browne, who had prepared a plan of the hall. Arrangements for the entertainment of the performers were left in the hands of the Indies’ committee, and it was decided that the men should meet a week before tho concert to arrange further details. THE FIRE BRIGADE. The local plant was recently inspected by Mr T. J. Watts, advisorj- superintendent of the Volunteer Fire Brigade Association. Mr Watts waa well pleased with what he saw, remarking that the Sumner plant was amongst the best of its kind in the Dominion. Tho motor ha# now covered, during the practices, most of the steep grades in the borough and, so far, has proved a very “willing horse,” more than justifying the claims made for it. LADIES RIFLE CLUB. Though it was resolved at the last general meeting that there should bo two practices a week, to work up for the coming match, it is found, as once before when two practices were in operation, that the club tends to divide itself into two parts, and in view of the many other social distractions only on one night in the week can a really satisfactory attendance be counted on. Some good scores were made. Miss M’Ewan and Airs O’Connor tied with a. score of 65, and Mrs Glackin took the brooch. Mrs O’Connor is reaping the reward of her two years faithful attendance on shooting nights, and becoming a really fine shot. Vice-captain Dorothy Keig has been much missed from the club owing to a. severe cold. -THE BACHELORS' BALL. The committee which has taken this function in hand deserve to meet with success. Nothing that counts for enjoyment has been left undone, and a large number of tickets has been sold. Mr Louis Bloy’s full jazz band has been secured.
