ANGLO-JAPANESE TREATY .
MR HOLLAND’S CRITICISM. (Per Pnrpf Association.) WESTPORT, August 25. Mr H. 15. Holland. M.P., chairman of the Parliamentary Labour Party, spoke in the Town Hall this evening | on the Anglo—Japanese Alliance, which he declared grew out of the struggle of the capitalists of various ’countries for trading concessions and territorial acquisitions in China. He enumerated coal and iron mines and other industries which arc under Japanese control. asserting that some millions of British capital were invested in Japanese companies. He held that notwithstanding the Anglo-American arbitration arrangement it still was possible for Britain to be drawn into war against America on the side of Japan. It was quite certain that Britain could he involved in war in support of Japan against * France, Russia, China or any other country than America. The Labour movement of Australia and New Zealand was practically unanimous in its opposition to renewal of the present Treaty, but would _favour an international arrangement based on friendly economic and political relationship and making for peace.
