CLERK ARRESTED ON CHARGE OF THEFT. STATE COAL OFFICE MONEYS. j Patrick John Butler, twenty-one I years of age, a clerk, employed in the State coal office, Christchurcn, was arrested by Detective-Sergeant Quartermain to-day on the following charge “ That between September 1. 1920, and August 3, 1921, he did steal the j sum of £2033 4s 4d.” Butler was subsequently brought before the Magistrate’s Court, and was i remanded till August 26. * Specific charges against accused were that on October 5, 1920, he stole £ls 13s 4d, the property of the New Zealand Government; and that on October 4, 1920, lie stole £lO, the property of the New Zealand Government. Accused was represented by Mr ML J. Greason. Bail was allowed in £IOO and two sureties of £IOO each, j It is stated that all the money has j been recovered, none of it having been ; spent. The thefts aro alleged to have been committed by manipulation of the j cash register.
