(Reserved for late news received after the paper has gone to press.) MINERS’ CONFERENCE. LONDON, August 17. Contrary to expectations, the Miners’ Annual Conference, over which Mr Smith presided, opened in Ail unusually subdued utmospliere. Mr Smith said the influence of the kvar became manifest in the economic position of the coal trade. Sense of power and importance which had developed in the minds of workmen was not- altogether healthy. It gave many jf them exaggerated opinions of their power. If they had learned a lesson from the October, 1920, strike, they would have followed different tactics to those adopted in March. He considered it was a wrong decision to ight upon the pool issue, and subsequent events had proved that it waswrong. Another error was the withdrawal of the safety men. Its consequences were all around them to-day.
