THE INFLUENZA SCARE,
$ NO REASON FOR ALARM. [Per Press Association.l WELLINGTON, August 16. On a telegram from Christchurch rei garding influenza being submitted to | the I>ireetor of Health, Xh- Valintine, by a “ Now Zealand Times ” reporter, I he said": ”1 think it Is an unnecessarily ‘ alarming telegram. I have beet) in ; communication with the medical officer I in Christchurch with regard to these cases on the Maori and Mararoa. The two boats have been under surveillance by the Health Department for the past few days, but so far no deaths have been reported. From information from other parts of the Dominion there is no reason for alarm. Pneumonia deaths, always an indication, are lower than i they were last week. W© are keeping | the matter very closely watched, as ! you may easily imagine. Though we have these cable reports that influenza j is raging in Sydney we have no informI ation from the Sydney health anthorj ities that there is any cause for alarm, j We ba\ r e plenty of vaccine. It ; is available at tho various hospitals, j hut from reports from the Board of ! Health in the United Kingdom we do not feel justified in actually recommending the public to submit to vaccination, though the vaccine is there for those who want it. ? y
