Mrs F. G. Gibson was hostess at a six table bridge party last evening. Sir Heaton and Lady Rhodes returned to Otahuna to-day frorfi Wellington. Mr and Mrs Jorgenson (Wellington) are visiting Christchurch. Mr and Mrs E. L. Barnes (Palmerston North) aro in town for the race .. Mr and Mrs Berryman (Wellington) arrived in Christchurch to-day. Miss Avery (Blenheim) is in Christchurch, staying at the United Sen vice. Mrs Edgar .Stead has returned to Christchurch from Honolulu. Miss Galloway (Dunedin) is theguesi of Mrs Egerton Reid. Pockley and Miss Marcia Pockley (Wellington) go north this evening, after a stay in Christchurch Mrs B. Reid (Mangaitanoka) arrived in Christchurch this morning and is staying at Warner’s. Mr and Mrs W. Jeffrey (Wellington), will be amongst visitors to Christchurch for the races. Mr and Mrs T. Young (Auckland) arrived in Christchurch to-day and are staying at Warner’s. . Mr and Mrs R. Leith-Begg (Wanganui) are expected in Christchurch tomorrow, and will stay at the United Service. The Christchurch Jazz Club met last evening in the Oddfellows’ Hall, most of the members, and a number or guests, being present. Sullivan and Laskej'. k The members of the Canterbury Women’s Club gave an “At Home ” yesterday for Mr and Mrs Frederick Hobbs, of the Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company, Mr Hobbs being a member of a well-known Christchurch family. Other members of the company present were Mr and Mrs J. Ralston, Mr J. Hay, Miss Cissie Vaughan, and Miss Thelma Carter. The president, Lady Denniston, welcomed the guests, Mr Hobbs responding. The club room was beautifully decorated with spring flowers, and a sumptuous afternoon tea was dispensed. A musical programme was contributed by Mrs J. Russell ,( Wellington), Mrs Kendall, Mrs Rosewarne, and Miss Lulu Hannay, the last mentioned singing two songs composed by Mrs Burnes-Loughnan. Amongst those present were Mrs Thacker, Mrs H. The ladies ofWLhe Papanui Tennis Club recently arranged a progressive euchre tournament, the proceeds being in aid of funds to improve the courts. A very enjoyable evening was spent, prizes being awarded as follow: Ladies, Miss Al. Shepherd; men, Mr A. Ives; consolation prizes. Airs Butt and Air Warren.

Blanket Nurse Wilson will speak on the welfare of children at the Y.W.C.A. on Alonday evenings during August and alter the lectures will give advice. The course will include instruction in the best methods of feeding, bathing and clothing babies, the treatment of. children’s ailments, and, in short, everything that helps to make and keep a baby jolly and well. The course is open to all girls and women who wish to learn how to take proper care of children. A well-attended meeting of the general committee for Violet Day was held in the Art Gallery, Airs Thacker presiding. It wtis decided to hold the day on Wednesday, August 31, as growers of violets consider that the flowers will be ready and at their best by that date. Arrangements were made for numerous stalls to be located in different parts of the city for the sale of produce, sweets, etc., as well as flowers. It was resolved to ask the general public for gifts for the occasion. Alore young ladies are still required for the sale of flowers in the streets, and those who are willing to assist should send in their names to the secretary. Box 29, Christchurch, the committee will meet again on Alonday morning, August 15. At the monthly meeting of the Christchurch District Nursing Association, Nurse Alaude reported that the present winter had been exceptionally light as regards sickness. The work of the association was chiefly among old people. The association was well equipped for every kind of sickness, even to beds and bedding, but they were in need of the assistance of voluntary workers who would go to the houses of the sick and do one or two hours’ work a day, in preparing food for patients and doing necessary house work. The visits paid by the nurses for July numbered 1080, including 137 patients ' who were attended to at the rooms. There were 411 inquiries received at the office for various reasons.

Another of the fortnightly social evenings in connection with the Sumner Croquet Club was held in the Town Hall on Thursday evening, when the hostesses were Airs AY. lludson-Brown and Airs Coe. There was a good attendance, tlie evening being spent with a five hundred competition. After an enjoyable and close- contest, Aliss Bain and Mrs Alulcock were declared the prize winners. The serving of a dainty supper brought an enjoyable evening to a close. Amongst those present were Airs J. A. Booth, Airs Bain, Air and Airs F. C. Malpas, Airs Dawe, Airs I. AVilson, Airs F. S.
