Mrs F. Gordon is in to Tm. Mr and Mrs J. Soulsby (Oamaru) are in town. Mr and Mrs P. G. Slater (Dunedin) aro staying at tho Clarendon. Mr and Mrs W. G. Copland (Rakaia) are spending a holiday m Christchurch. Mr and Mrs W, G. Spite (AVaimate) are visiting Christchurch. Mr and Airs Hugh Ensor are in town. Mrs W. Hyde (Hamilton) is in town for National Week. Miss Hilaire Rullen (Kaikoura) is in town. Air and Mrs W. Bullen (.Kaikoura) are in town. Mrs J. Russell (Wellington) is visiting her daughter, Mrs J. Guthrie, Armagh Street. Miss Alice M'Laren (South Canterbury) will be the guest of Mrs George Rhodes for race week. Mr and Mrs Bentley Davison (Auckland), arrived in Christchurch to-day and are staying at Warner’s. The Misses E. and M. Holmes (RaIraia) hare been iu town on a brief visit. Mr and Mrs Bruce Ireland (Invercargill) came into town to-day, and w ill stay until after the races. Mrs C. G. Dalgety ha*= returned to Christchurch after several months spent in the North Island. Mr and Mrs W. Tlodge (Invercargill) are expected in town this ©V€*uing, and will stay at the United Service. Mr and Mrs Elliston Orbell (("Dunedin) will be in Christchnrch for the races, ancl will stay with Miss M. Tabart, Cashmere Hills. Mrs Bowrcm and Mrs A. IT. Turnbull hare returned from Wellington, where they have been for the Y.AI.C. A. Conference. Miss JDulcie Mitchell has been singing at Bournemouth arid states a London correspondent, and tho day after the reception she was to leave for Glasgow to fuliil a concert engagement. Mr and Mrs M. d’Oisly (the latter Is Rosina Buckham on the stage) are, ssays a London correspondent, looking forward very keenly to their New Zealand tonr next year. Their engage-ment-list is always a. heavy one, and they returned from Italy just the night before they appeared at tho Crystal Palace at the big Handel Festival concert. At the Canterbury Women’s Club last evening, Mrs Stewart Sampson and Mrs R. R. Walter acted as hostesses at a delightful card party, when bridge and five hundred were enjoved by the guests. The drawing-room was gay with apering blossoms and beautiful sprays of pink heather. Tho prizewinners for the bridge tournament were Miss Sinclair, Mrs Robins, and Miss Gunderson, and for the five hundred Mrs Cooper and Mrs Kirk. After the prizes were presented, a supper was served. Those present included Mesdames Thacker, Owen. M. C. Keane, A. At. Burns, Thornhill Cooper, Brown, Al'Loughlin, Brock. Armitage, Ogilvio, Russell (Wellington), Schneider, Hill, Maurice, Cooper, Wade, Collock, Shand, Lorrimer. Summers, Jones, Murray, Robins, Kirk, Dickenson. Carey. Misses Barker, Cane. Orchard. Sinclair, Brock, Spence, T. Davis, and Gunderson. T>r Maud Fere £ave an address on “ Football ” at the meeting of the Harbour Lights Club at the Carlton last night. As in former addresses she warmly advocated the Association gome for girls, and she was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The bachelors of Sumner and Podcliffs have established an energetic committee with a view to their danco at the Sumner Town Hall shortly. A ladies’ committee, under Mrs S. W. Dean, is in charge of catering and refreshments. Mr P. G. Keig is the honorary secretary. A surprise party organised by Miss Violet Mahan was taken to the residence ov the Rev J. H. G. Chappie, North Richmond, on Saturday evening. Xho surprisers received a hearty welcome, after which games and dancing were indulged in. Those present included:—Misses CJiapplo (3), V. Mahan, G. Harbutt, 31. Siraes, J. Davidson, B. Stringfellow, A. Painter, H. Bryant. P. Harris, R. Jefcoato, E. Cameron, D. Tucker. M. Al’Gill and C. Hid, Messrs Chappie (2), F. Clark, H. MTrityre, E. Nauiuann. H. Smith, R. Ford. O. Johnston. J. Hardy, R. Whceley, S. Flood, S. Carleton,. j. Forsythe, B. Rundle and I/. Ballantyne. A jolly little house-party was given on Monday evening by Mr and Mrs G. W. ATunday, in honour of their eldest daughter’s twenty-first birthday. The drawing-room was festooned in orange and amber, with masses of wattle and yellow daisies. The dining-room, which was used for dancing, was decorated in eornl-piuk and green, with white dairies. The music was. supplied by Mr Tipler, and supper Avas ..served in tho drawing-room. Afeikle, Freeman. Witte, Mundav, Hollis (2), Higgs, Pickles, Daw and Templeton (2). A meeting of the Social Hygiene Committee was held on Friday. July 29 : present—Mesdaraes Roberts (in tho chair), Thacker. Sheppard, Henderson. Begg and Tomlinson. Miss Henderson and Sister Edith Walton. Miss Cardale was added to the committee. Mrs Watkins’s monthly report was read. There 'were fifty-five visitors to tho rooms, several being mothers asking help and information in the sex education of their children. The following executive committee was appointed : Mrs Andrew Anderson, Mrs Henderson Begg. Miss Henderson, the president and secretary. Mrs Roberts reported speakjng at the mothers’ meeting and giving three addresses to girls at the Y.W.C.A. Miss Henderson brought forward two remits from- the National Council, (a) asking for the age of consent to ho raised to eighteen ; (b) that the time for laving information should !>e extended. It was a,greed to support both these petitions. The members of the Opawa Amateur Swimming Club held their aunual social and dance in the Cadena on Tuesday evening. A large number of nieml>ers and friends were present, and a very enjoyable evening was Bi>ent bv all. During the evening Mr P. Monzios, patron of the club, made a small presentation on behalf of the club members to Misses Shand and Bristod in recognition of their performances during the past season. Mr A. Goodhart (vice-president) also presented the club with a handsome challenge cup for annual competition among members. Mrs Shand and Messrs Turner, Turnbull and Box supplied the music, and items were contributed by Miss T. Painter and Mr Barraclough. Among those present were: Meedames Bristed, Shand, Low and Storey.
