PROGRESS LEAGUE.

MEETING OF EXECUTIVE. The executive of the Canterbury Progress League met last night; present —Messrs A. G. Henderson (president), H. J. Mairmci, W. J. Jenkin, T. A. Blackley, D. G. Sullivan. M.P., \\ . H. Viusor, Cyrus Williams. \V. E. Lead ley, O. T. Evans, J. Eongton. H. K. M'Alpine, W. M. Tycrs G. T. Mulcock, G. Ji. Judd, F. Storry, M. IV. Stevenson’ H. Galbraith, G. H. Holford and U. J- Knight. The chairman extended a welcome to Mr Blackley, representing the Ashburton County Council*. He reported on the big deputation to Sir Francis Bell concerning the establishment of a forestry Hohool in Canterbury. “ While the league played a largo part in the organisation of that great deputation,” be said, ** we all owe far more than you realise to the members of Parliament, whose co-opera-tion was absolutely with us from the jump, and whose work deserves the very highest praise.” Concerning a visit to the Harper diversion works on the occasion of the recent washout, the president said that if the washout had come earlier they would have been in serioU3 trouble, hut Canterbury had been fortunate. A representative com mil tec had been called together to consider hydroelectricity as it affected Canterbury. A subcommittee consisting of Professor Soott and Messrs Cyrus "Williams. Turner and Tempi in had bceu set up to prepare framework for t’be committee's operations. These gentlemen were all very competent engineers, and their work should form a valuable basis for future operations. An unemployment committee was also getting to work. The financial statement for th© period from Juno 30 showed:—Receipts, £347 8a 2d; expenditure. £273 lfis 7d ; cash credit, £73 21s 7d; outst anding accounts, approximately <£6o. “ The position is pretty serious* and we w.i.ut more money as soon as we can get it,” said tho president.
