SUMNER ROAD.

CONFERENCE OF LOCAL BODIES.

A conference of local bodies was held in the City Council this afternoon to consider plans for the improvement of the Sumner Road.

The Mayor (Dr Thacker, M.P.), who presided, said that the Government would give £SOO if the local bodies found £750. When the Zig-zag Road was completed by the Government the improvement of the remainder of the road to Sumner would enable traffic to go from Christchurch to Lyttelton on a good road. This would be of great importance, especially if the Government consented to motor-cars being driven on to the ferry wharf. The question was what amount each of the local bodies would pay towards the cost.

On the motion of Mr J. M’Combs, M.P., at whose suggestion the conference had been convened. it was decided
