THE LABOUR DEFEAT.

ATTRIBUTED TO THE GOVERNMENT. BRISBANE MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received August 2, 9.20 a.m.) BRISBANE, August 2. The Metropolitan District Labour Council expressed the opinion that the Government must shoulder the responsibility for the defeat of the Labour candidates at the Municipal Elections, and passed a resolution that the Council is of opinion that if the Government were not prepared to adhere to the principles of the Labour platform, it had better resign office. (A recent message from Brisbane stated : —The latest municipal election returns show : Anti-Labour, 657 ; Labour, 61. The defeat of Labour is all the more marked because adult franchise, under which the election was held, was specially introduced in the Labour interests, and the Labour candidates offered the electors various panaceas, including free amusements and a municipal milk supply.)
