BOXING AND ATHLETICS.

ST PATRICK’S SPORTS ASSOCIATION. A meeting of the St Patrick’s Sports Association was held last night for the purpose of expressing disapproval with the remarks made at the recent boxing conference at Greymouth by the two delegates of tho Christchurch Sports Club, Messrs W. G. Atack and T. E. Robson. Mr B. J. M’Kenna (president) presided. St Patrick’s Association had niauo application for aili.iation, but the conference cud not see its way clear to grant it The chairman stated that in opposing the affilication at Greymouth Mr Robson made remarks which the association took exception to. He had said: —“The Christchurch Sport-a Club hud developed boxing along amateur lines, but a new body had cropped up in Christchurch, the St Patrick's Sports Association, who had received a permit to li Id a competition among local members and gear liad been lent • but later on they wanted to know why tl*cy -could not hold a professional championship. This was narrowed out, and*, they wanted to hold six-round championships. An application had be n made for affiliation, but under the Police Offences Act it. had to be refused. They wanted to oust tho Christchurch Sports Club, because they had an idea there was money in the game. St. Patrick's Association was out after the Sports Club’s blood. What he wanted to fake back to Christchurch was the conference's definition of Ideal association.” The chairman went on to say that Mr W. G. Atack at the conference bad said that tho St Patrick’s Association had money, power and influence behind it. It would : be madness to grant recognition to more 1 than one association in any one town. It would be wise to get a. provision in the Police Offences Act permit-ling not more than one association in one town. Mr B. J. M’Kenna said that the statement that the association . was out for the Sports Club’s Mood was absolutely nb-urd. The .association only wanted to foster a wholesome snort and ben "fit the peonle < f the ritv. Everything was to be vailed bv converted effort. This was amply demonstrated last Saturday in football. The statement t'at thev were after 'the rrmc, b—nu«e fbere was motley in it was absurd. c ’t Patrick's Assocint''*n bad beep in action nVilv two years and bad paid out over £IOOO in the, enc*o')’rarr'"P on+ of athletic*.
