NAVY LEAGUE.

CANTERBURY BRANCH. The General Committee of the Canterbury branch of tho Navy League met laat evening, Mr H. J. Marriuer presiding over a good attendance. The chairman reported in connection with the two outings arranged by tbo league for the men of H.M.S. Chatham, one to Glentunnel and one to Ashburton and Methven. He liad received 8. letter from Commodore Hoth&m, asking him to return thanks to tile ladies’ committee and to all who had helped in connection with the outinge. Mr A. Ferguson and Mr H. Holland referred to the excellent work of the chairman in connection with the visit of H.M.S. Chatham. On the motion of the chairman, it was decided to write to the friends of the league at Glen tunnel and Ashburton, thanking them for assisting in entertaining the men. Mrs Wilson, on behalf of the Ladiee' Auxiliary Committee, reported fully on the different entertainments arranged for the petty officers and men of H.M.S- Chatham. It was decided, on the motion of the chairman, to send a letter to the Ladies’ Auxiliary Committee expressing thanks for the excellent work they had done in entertaining the men. The secretary (Mr C. J. Treleaven) reported that T3OOO of the funds of the league had been invested at per cent, and there was an amount of £ISOO vet to be invested. The secretary also reported that since *he 'beginning of the year 144 new members had joined, bringing the. total to 10120. The Is dies’ committee had enrolled most of the new members, and unless the committee was able to induce more men to join, the league was likely to become practically a women’s branch of the league. Since the last meeting twenty country school branches had been formed, with a membership of 465, and at present there was 1 a total of twenty country school branches, ten city primary school branches and four city secondary school branches, with a total membership of 133®. Regarding the training scheme suggested by the league, the president reported that he "had discussed the matter with Commodore Hotham, who suggested that it should be held over until Mr Massey returned to the Dominion. The secretary stated that in consequence •>* the publication in the newspapers of a letter from Commodore Walsh, of H.M.S. Philomel, mentioning that, he could do with a lad willing to learn cooking, there had been quite a rush of boys in his office, and he had already telegraphed to Commodore Walsh that a lad had been engaged for the purpose. The financial statement showed the receipts to have amounted to £157 12s, including a bank balanco of £93 5® 6d broueht forward from the previous month. The expenditure during the month had amounted to £l3l pis lid, leaving a. credit balance in hand of £-25 19s Id. The sea training fund was shown to have a balance of £62 5s Id at the Rost Office Savings Bank, and the general fund a balance of £6SI 5s Bd. -
