Aliss L. Gardiner has returned io Sumner from' TThVkc’s Bay. Air nnd Mrs K. P- If. Burbury, of Sherwood, are staying at tho Clarendon lor a few days. Mrs Walter Macfarlane arrived from Kaiwarm yesterday, and is staying at IVarncr’s. Mrs Kenneth Murchison, who has been the guest of Mrs Deans, returned to Kir we© to-day. Mr and Mrs Holder arrived from Dunedin yesterday, and are at the Clarendon. Mr and Mrs Maurice Bates aie» staying with Mrs NormanWardell, Poynder Avenue, Fendalton. Miss M Carthy (Palmerston North) is staying with lier sister-in-law, Airs S. K. M’Carthv. in Fendaltou. Mrs I*. Mitchell arrived from Dimedin last night, and is staying at the Uuited Service. Air and Mrs K. Tonks (Auckland), who have been visiting Christchurch, went south yesterday. A very enjoyable musical evening and dance was given by Mr and Mrs A. Stevens, Rangiora.' last Saturday. Dancing took place in the drawingroom and a dainty supper was served in the dining-room, the tableß being decorated with yellow violas. Those present included * Mr and Airs C. K. Bell, Air and Mrs T. Shankland, Afr and Airs H. Cockroft, Afr and Airs G. Leecb, Afr and Airs Stracban, Airs AVilson (Christchurch), Airs Pratt, Aliss F. Jennings, Aliss D. AYilson «„/id Miss Robinson. AJessrs 11. Cooper, X. AYoods and S. Storey. A very enjoyable afternoon and evening was spent at Mr IT. Uoscoe’s, Bur wood, by members ot‘ tho il Hump-ty-Dumpty 99 pantomime company, before leaving Christchurch. The din-ing-room was prettilv decorated with heather, and the tables beautifully arranged with pretty pink everlasting Sowers. The afternoon was spent partly on the river, tho ladies thoroughly enjoying the boating. After tea a musical evening was held. Afr St Clair, better known in tho pantomime, as Humpty-Dumptv, played several violin soToe, Afr Jones accompanying him on the piano. Miss Vaughan, of Wellington, and Aliss Adams sang several solos. After supper the party motored back io the city. At th© monthly meeting of tho '“'hristchurch District Nursing Association on Monday, Nurse Maude reported that for tho month of June the nurses made 1014 visits, visits from outpatients numbered 156 and tld calls were made at the office. She suggested that more publicity should be given to tho work of the district nurses, so many people having only a vague notion of what they do, thereby limiting the usefulness of the association. ‘‘Our business/’ Nurse Alaude said, “is to attend in the houses of those who aro sick and not able to employ private or visiting nurses, irreapectvo of social position or need. Wo have every convenience for nursing, and often send out what is required. Wo also lend wheel chairs at a small charge. We have a good out-patients' room and attend to minor accidents and dressingsWe are always ready to take over patients who have left hospital and requiring dressings daily. The ladies’ Evening in connection with the Cambridge Terraco Literary and Debating Society was held on Alon_ day, when Air 71. Holland presided over a good attendance. A very enjoyable programme was rendered including vocal and instrumental items, games and competitions. The following contributed to the programme:—Airs O. Rodda, Aliases E. Bascand, T. Holland, G. Harris, V. Clare and E. Brooker, An excellent supper was provided. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the ladies for their successful entertainment.

An enjoyable time was spent last Thursday evening at tho Alisses Woods’ home, Disraeli Street, to celebrate tho coming of age of their youngest sister, Aliss Agnes Woods. Atusic nnd dancing were indulged in. and a dainty supper was served in the dining-room*. One and all joined in wishing their young friend “ Many happy returns.” Alusica! items were given by Alisses Hansen, Fail (2), Taylor, M’Kenzie, Airs Payne, Air A’Gourt aud Air Maiquet. Among those present were:— Afr and Airs F. Taylor. Air and Airs Hodgkinson, Air and Airs Drake, Air and Mrs J. Christansen (Wanganui), Air and Mrs J. Woods, Airs B. Watson and Alessrs Bonar, Caliari, Payne and Al’Kenzie.

The inclusion of Aliss AlilHccnt Jennings in the important role of The Princess in the Christchurch Operatic Society’s production of “ The Country Girl,” which will commence on .July 18, in the Theatre Royal, will considerably strengthen the vocal side. Aliss Jennings’s capabilities as a vocalist are well known and her interpretative skill and experience should he a big factor in the general success. Aliss Clifford, of Wellington, who was to have played Sophie, is indisposed, and her place will be taken by Airs J. Hulmo, well known ou the professional stage as Eva Moore. Aliss Arm Aloir, whose performance as Yvonne in “ Paul Jones” will bo fresh in memory, has been selected to take the role of Marjorie, which Alas Holme was to have played.
