A conference to consider a combined effort to check the spread of infectious diseases in and around Christchurch, with special reference to diphtheria, was held in the City Council Chambers to-day, the Mayor presiding. The question was discussed at length, and suggestions were made that tlie services of experts should be secured to investigate the causes of diphtheria, and devise a plan of campaign

A meeting of West Coasters was held in the Foresters’ Hall last evening to consider the advisability of _ forming a West Coast Association in Christchurch. Mr A. Fraser presided- In explaining the objects of the gathering he rererred to the ?2rge nngjner or Coasters now resident in this city, and thought the time opportune for the formation of such a society, oji similar lines to what bad already been established in Wellington. Mr T. Fogarty was appointed secretary pro tem, and a strong committee was formed to carry out 4 the initial preliminaries. It was decided to celebrate the formation or the society with a social at an early date.
