CHRISTCHURCH. TO-DAY'S CAUSES. Air YVyvern Wilson. S.M., presided at to-day’s sitting’ of tho Ala gist rate’s Court. DRUNKENNESS. A first offender for drunkenness who consented to a prohibition order being issued against him, was convicted and discharged and another first offender was fined 10s, in default twenty-four hours’ imprisonment. DRINK AND COMPLICATIONS. Janies Joseph Brown pleaded guilty to charges cf drunkenness, of having used obscene language in Hereford Stroet and with wilfully damaging one cell utensil valued at £1 Bs, the property of the Government. Senior-Sergeant Kelly said tbo accused bad a. long list of previous convictions. His Worship said that the accused apparently commenced drunkenness when ho was quite a young man. Hia first conviction was in 1902 and his worst period appeared to be about 1906. On the charge of drunkenness accused was convicted and fine! os in default twenty-four hours’ imprisonment, on t-lie charge of using obscene language he was fined 40s, in default seven days’ imprisonment and ordered to pay tho value of the damaged cell utensil. INSUFFICIENT EVIDENCE. Thomas Naught on appeared on remand, charged with breaking and entering the Anglican Convent at Styx, Belfast with intent to commit a crime. Senior-Sergeant Kelly said that a man was noticed in the laundry of the convent on the night in question and next day the accused, who had been seoL* in t-fye locality that night, was arrested. The Ala gist rate said there did not apto he sufficient evidence of identification to justify taking the matter to the Supreme Court. The charge would be dismissed for lack of evidence. ALLEGED THEFT. Ataka Kaimoka, alias Alice Wilson (Air C. S. Thomas), was charged with the theft of clothing, a pair of boots and a dress basket, of a total value of £8 5s fid, the property of the Salvation Army Reformatory Institution, Papanui Road. Tho accused was remanded till July 1-BY-LAW BREACHES. Jack Page. G. W. J. Parsons and Charles James Goodall, charged with leaving a motor-cycle unattended without a light, were each fined 10s and costs. On charges of cycling without lights. Roy Frater was convicted and discharged, and Victor Main. Herbert Steven, Arthur Olsen and John Al’Neilage were each fined 10s and costs. Reginald Whittington was convicted and ordered to pay costs. Ernest Davev, charged with taking a motor-cycle into the Domains, was fined os and costs. Norman Stanley Lawn, charged with using a motor with front numbers obscure, was fined 5s and costs. Thomas Kevern, for using a motorcar with no rear number, was fined 5s and costs. Thomas Norrio Horsley. charged with using a motor with no front number. was lined 5s and costs. Ilarry Crake, charged with using a motor with no number attached, was fined os and costs. Ernest Alyfred Adams, for whom Air T. W. Ilowe appeared, was fined 20s and costs for travelling between a tramcar and the kerbing, 10s and costs for not having a certificate of ability to drive, and convicted and ordered to pay costs on a charge of not sounding a horn when passing foot passengersCharles 8. Al'Cully (Mr C. S. Thomas) was convicted and fined 10s and costs for speeding over the intersection of Ferry Road and Barbadoes Street on June 11. Cornelius Scrimshaw (Air J. A. Beattie) pleaded not guiltv to a charge of permitting billiards to be plaved in his saloon after hours. Tho defence was a complete denial of the charge. Defendant was fined 40s and costs. James Underwood. TTarrv Turnbull. YVilliam Harrington and John D. Carney, for whom Mr J. A. Beattie appeared, pleaded not. guilty to charges of being found in Scrimshaw’s billiard saloon after hours. The defendants were each fined 10s and costs. Arthur 1,. C. Watkins. who was charged on tho information of Herbert Alneintosh with failing to return a taxi-driver’s badge, and also witli not returning a key, was fined 5s and costs on each charge-BY-LAW INTERPRETATION. The Alagistrate heard legal argument regarding the interpretation of by-law No. 257, under which charges had been heard against Frank Hears, Ernest Smith, William Powell Hayward. John Cuming and Thomas Brassington, of permitting vehicles to stand at a place other than a public stand. Mr H. 11. Lough nan appeared fni behalf of tho City Council. Air F. W. Johnston represented all tbo defendants. Mr Johnston contended that the by-law in question was unreasonable and was a hardship on motorists. His Worship intimated that he would give his decision in writing. LYTTELTON. (Bbfore .Messrs F. G. Norton and F. Knights, J.P.’s.) DRUNKENNESS. One first offender for drunkenness was fined os. Peter Dalton was convicted and discharged on a charge of drunkenness and lined 10s for committing a nuisance in Norwich Quay. DISORDERLY' CONDUCT. , James O'Brien, for disorderly conduct whilst drunk, and Roliert John Hamer, similarly charged, were fined os each.
