CHRISTCHURCH. TO-DAY’S CASES. Mr Wy vern Wilson. • S M., presided at to-day’s sitting of the Christchurch Magistrate’s Court. DR TT N KENNESS. One first offender charged with drunkenness was fined ss, in default twenty-four hours’ imprisonment. CHARGE OF THEFT. James Hardy, forty years of age, (Mr IV. F. Tracey) was charged that between February 1 and June 17 at Christ church lie stole divers sums of money amounting to £1 4. s Pd, the property of Tni Tapu Dairy Company. A remand was granted till June 21. Chief-detective M’ Tlveney said that thero were other charges pending involving a considerable sum of monov. Bail was fixed at £IOO. A MEAN OFFENCE. •John Henry, thirty-four years of age, convicted on Friday of stealing a £1 note belonging to a Hindu, was sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment. The police stated that Henry was out on probation on a charge of forging and uttering. The Magistrate said that Henry's offence was a mean one. BREACH OF THE PEACE Thomas Pauling pleaded not guilty and Thomas Tifrnbull pleaded guilty under provocation to a charge that oil June 17 in Manchester Street, they used threatening behaviour, causing a breach of the peace. The police stated that the accused Turnbull, when arrested, alleged that he had boon struck first. Pauling denied that he had been fighting. Pauling said that the trouble arose through Turnbull having an argument with a third man. Turnbull stated that in Manchester Street the third man said he wanted a bottle of beer and attempted to search witness. Witness pushed the other man against the wall, and Pauling fell through stumbling over the gutter. I he Magistrate said that the molestation evidently came from Pauling and his mate. Turnbull, with Court’s consent, altered his plea to ©no of not guilty. The charge against him was dismissed. Pauling was convicted and lined 40s, in default four days’ imprisonment. REMANDED. Samuel Needham, of Lincoln Road, Addington, was charged with unlawfully carnally knowing a girl under sixteen years of age A remand was granted till June 25, bail being allowed self in one surety of £2OO, and two other sureties of £IOO each. J U V ENILE COURT. THE BIRCH ORDERED. Whipping was ordered in a juvenile case, in which a bov eleven wears of aye, pieced guilty to the theft of a watch vfuued at £2, the property of Thomas C. Davies. Evidence was given that the boy had previously borne a good character, being an eXcelent scholar, lie Jived with his foster parents and had never given them any trouble previously. The Magistrate ordered that tlie hoy should receive three strokes of tho birch rod, and that the watch should be returned to its owner.
