Mr and Mrs S. W. Foster (San Francisco) are amongst oversea visitors to Christchurch staying at the Clarendon. Miss Marjorie Dixon intends to leave Christchurch next week on a visit to Fiji. Air and Airs James Deans (Homehush) have gone to Dunedin to stay with Air and Mrs Holdsworth. Airs K. V. Palmer and Aliss Peggy Palmer have returned from a visit to South Canterbury. Mr and Airs Walter Moore have gone to the North Island to see their daughter, Airs Mills. Her Excellency Rady Jiellicoe will visit Palmerston North at an earlv dato to participate in a run of the Alanawatu Hunt. Miss Ella Hehnore has gone to the North Island on a visit to her uncle there. Mr and Mrs Alex. Mitchell, of Riccarton, gave an enjoyable dance party in the Riccarton Town Hall on Thursday evening, to celebrate the coming-of-age of their eldest daughter, Miss Venie Mitchell. The hall had been tastefully decorated, royal blue and red being the predominating colours. Interspersed with the dances were pongs, instrumental items and fancy dancing. The duty devolved upon Mr W. A. Col will during the supper adjournment, to tender the customary felicitations to Miss Mitchell, after which dancing was resumed, well into the morning hours.

Mrs Margaret Shepherd, whose death occurred at Southbrook on Thursday, came to Canterbury in the early sixties, and after residing for a time at Iticcarton spent the last forty-seven years of her life at Southbrook. Sho was an esteemed member of the Methodist Church and took a prominent part of its activities. Seven years ago Mrs Shepherd underwent an operation for cataract, but it was unsuccessful, and she was totally blind from that time until her death. Kingscote, Miss Gracroft Wilson, Mr and Mrs Bernard Wood, Miss Mary Macdonald. Mr and Mrs A. S. Nicholls, Mr and Airs H. Wauchop, Air and Airs C. Ward, Aliss Rita Gibson, Miss Valerie Reid, Miss Jenkins, Aliss Lascelles, Mifes AVynu-Williams, Aliss Edna Whitcombe, Miss Alolly Bean, Aliss Ciceley Pratt, Miss Judy Beckett, Messrs Boyle, Reeves, Loughnan, Cotterill, Livingstone, Lascelles, W. Ward and J. Cookson.

The annual hall of the Crown Clothing Company’s employees was held last 'Tuesday, in the Sydenham Football Club’s hall. The hall was decorated for tho occasion with paper streamers of gold and blue, and large baskets of green plants were suspended from the ceiling. Miss M’Donald’s orchestra supplied the music, which was much appreciated. The duties of M.C. were efficiently carried out by Mr O. J. Empsom. Late in the evening a dainty supper was served. About one hundred couples were present. The members of the committee wore Misses B. Walter, R. Ledsham, M. and N. Smith, G. Pedler and A. Campion. On Thursday night, in St Paul’s Schoolroom, Papanui, a very successful social and dance was held to aid the Papanui School Committee with funds so as to provide prizes for and give to the children a picnic similar to the one given last season. Mr \v. R. Smith presided. A waltzing competition took place, and the judge, Mr Manning, placed Miss Pearce and T. Smith first and Mrs Gill and W. Sisson second. The prizes were presented to the winners by tlie chairman. Songs were sung by Mesdames Wood, E. Sisson and Kerridge and Miss Pearce and Mr W. lb Smith : Mr Manning gave a clog dance and Irish jig. llie accompaniments were played by Misses Wood and Brooks. Mr Mehritens was M.C. Tho dance music was in charge of Mr Rugg. The supper tables were well attended to by Mesdames Wood, Chapman and Mehrteus.
