CHRISTCHURCH SPORTS CLUB.

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The committee of the Christchurch Sports Club met last evening, when there were present Dr tV H. Simpson (president), and W. G. At;.el:. B. M’Kenna, W. K. Moyle. 11. D. Johnston, R. Brunadon, T. 32. Robson and Major R. Row. Mr Robson said that he had attended the meeting of the St Patrick’s Sports Association, at which it, was proposed to hold boxing competitions. With all due respect to tho members of the association, he thought the proposal was wrong, as it would mean overlapping and the signing away of the Christchurch Sports Club's authority. There could only be one club, and others wishing to conduct competitions would have to work ■under the direction o! the Christchurch Club. Mr M’Kenna, president of the St Patrick’s Association, said that tho members had been particularly enthusiastic in regard to tho proposition, and it was hoped to make the boxing as successful as the athletic competitions promoted by the association. The association had been approached by active boxers, and instructors to inaugurate such a competition. Athletics were certainly at a. low ebb in Christchurch. For instance, they had a champion in Christchurch in Bryan Cleary, but he had. only been seen in action once in this town, and that did not say irvuch for local interest. The association proposed to build a gymnasium, which would ne thrown open to anyone who wished to min. li it was feared that the activities of iho association were likely to usurp the Tights of the Sports Club in any way, he could ensure them that nothing was further from the minds of the promoters. The association wa< formed in the. interests of the sports, and he did not see why it should Xiot receive the assistance of the club. He au ggeated that a deputation from the association should wait upon the Sports Club end come to an understanding. Mr Atack said that boxing stood out distinct from all other sports in the matter of control, because it was governed by an Act of Parliament, which allowed only one controlling body in each centre. If they opened the doors to anybody, they would immediately give away their own power. With regard to competitions, nobody but those who had been identified with the sport knew the hi? hurdle the Christchurch Sports Club tad had to overcome. They had encouraged instructors by every mean* in their power, but their efforts had to & certain extent boon a failuro. By applying to the Sportß Club, the St Patrick’s Association could obtain a permit, provided they agreed to conform to the regulations under the Police Offencen Act Messrs M’Kenna and Moyle assured the members that the association did not want Be t itself up against the Christchurch £?porta Club, and they knew perfectly well they would have to run under the auspices ef the club The chairman asked Mr M’Kenna to inform the members of his association that they ■would, have the support of the Christchurch Mr Robson reported that the Theatre ftoyal h.3d been secured for the competition following officials were appointed for the competition to be held in the Theatre Roya.l -.—-Referee, Mr T.
