CHRISTCHURCH. TO-DAY’S CASES. (Before Mr Wyveim Wilson, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. A statutory first, offender was fined 20s, in default three days’ imprisonment, for drunkenness. Another was fined ob, in default twenty-four hours’ imprisonment. A female first offender wAs convicted and discharged. Thomas Egan was charged with being drunk and damaging'a pair of trousers, the property of the New Zealand Government.. Accused was fined sb, in default twenty-fotir hours’ imprisonment, for drunkenness, and on the charge of damaging the trousers, which were worn bv the constable who arrested him, be was ordered to pay £2, the estimated cost of repairs. Norman Bardeen (Mr W. F. Tracy*) was charged with drunkenness, assault, and refusing to quit licensed premises when requested to do so. A remand uutil Wednesday was granted, bail being allowed, self in £25 and one surety in a like sum., AN OFFENSIVE ACT. James Andrew Hooper was fined 20a and costs on a charge ol casting offensive matter in a public place. MAINTENANCE charge. Alfred Richard Allen was charged with failing to maintain his child. Ho was ordered to appear at Hokitika on Monday to enable an order to be made against him. YOUNG WOMAN REMANDED. Mary Lydia Ginn, aged twenty, was okarged with stealing at Blenheim a

lady’s bicycle, valued at £lB, on or about May 20. Accused was remanded for a week, and was ordered to remain in charge of the Salvation Army authorities. GAOL FOR BICYCLE THEFT. Alfred Kirk pleaded guilty to stealing a. bicycle, valued at £lO, at Christchurch on June 2. Inspector Hendrey said that Kirk had just been discharged from prison. Drink was his trouble. He had never been convicted of an indictable offence. The Magistrate said that it would be no use fining the accused, as he would not be able to pay. _ He would b© sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment. GAOL FOR STRIKING A WOMAN. Thomas Knight was charged with assaulting a young woman, Rhoda Byron, by striking her on the face with his clenched fist. Inspector Hendrey said that the accused had had a separation order issued against him yesterday. Last evening the accused’s wife and baby were at the railway station with Rhoda Byron, and when Mrs Kniglit gave the baby to her for a moment the accused went up to her and used abusive language. He then struck her blows on the face and body. A constable gave evidence that he found Mj,ss Bvron iu a prostrate condition at the station. The Magistrate said that the accused bad been guilty of a cowardly and blackguardly act. A fine would be of no use in this case, and accused would therefore be sentenced to fourteen days’ imprisonment. (Before Messrs G. Franklin and J. Gamble, J.F.’s.) Frank Morton, or Moreton, was charged with the theft on May 31 of £l2, the property of Gertrud© Annie Schumacher. He was further charged with the theft of an overcoat valued at £lO, the property of Beath and Co. Accused, who pleaded not guilty, reserved his defence and was committed for trial in the Supreme Court.
