HOUSEHOLD HINTS.
Ground rice, rubbed on with a soft rag, will clean velour hats. Do not rub silk while washing it. Knead in warm, soapy water. After washing hair and tooth brushes they should be allowed to dry in the open air. Before wearing new kid gloves for the first time it is a good plau to warm them before the tire. To clean whito kid gloves, put them on tho hands and rub with a piece of new india rubber. Vinegar placed in a pot of dried-up glue will moisten and make it liquid again. crust of bread eaten before breakfast avill cure indigestion. Remember that if you are steaming meat it should be put into the steamer when the water in the pot is cold- If put into the steamer when the water is boiling the meat will almost certainly be tough. A simple way to pouch an egg is to turn it into an old teacup in which a. piece of butter has been placed. Put the cup in a, small pan of boiling water, then the egg will be ready to take up in five minutes. lake some pieces of shredded soap. a. tea spoonful of saltpetre, and a heaped tablespoonful of ammonia; add one quart of warm water, and shake until the soap is dissolved. Put into a bottle and keep well corked. This mixture is excellent for washing clothes. Do not use soap in washing hairbrushes. Tmmerse to the top* of the bristles only in hot soda-water. This will make them white ni*d -clean, aim they will stiffen as new if dried in the open. II a pipe, should burst, turn off the water at the main. Then see if you can make a temporary mend by tapping the burst pant together. A “bandage” made of soap, or putty, and rags will serve until you can get the pipe repaired properly. A small box should bo kept for candle ends, chips of wood, old corks, empty match-boxes, used matches—in fact, anything that will burn.
