Sir Cecil Hodwell, Governor of Fiji, has sailed by the Niagara for Auckland. Ho had an enthusiastic send-off. There have been several reports lately as to a comet being seen as an impressive sight in the morning. This object, however, i 3 the planet Venus. The Government Astronomer .states that the oomet is not yet visible. Before the business was commenced at the Rangiora Magistrate’s Court today the Mayor (Mr F. B. Lane) welcomed Mr Wyvern Wilson, S.M., on behalf of the residents of the Town and the Justices of the Peace. Messrs 11. C. D. van Asch and F. W. Johnston extended ft welcome on behalf of the Bar. In acknowledging the welcome, Mr Wilson expressed his great pleasure at being stationed in Canterbury. especially in North Canterbury.
