ROAD WORK PROVIDED. 3U MN ER-LYTTE LTON GRADE. The Public Works Department has decided to provide work for forty unemployed on tho Hum ncr-Ly t tcltou Toad. They will be engaged to improve the grade and reduce Home of the curves. The road may be blocked for a short period during the operations, as in somo parts tho highway will be put in a new position. Preference is to bo given to returned sol--1 The rates of payment depart sharply j from tho general labourers 1 ’ award rates in Canterbury,, which arc :—General labourers 16s per day. and permanent employees of local 1 bodies 15a per day. In regard to the Lyttelton fcido of tho road, tho work to be completed there is mostly team and steam-roller work. The instruction to the Department is to do only work which will give employment to the maximum number of men. Mr J.
