RAILWAY CROSSINGS.
DELAYS TO TRAM TRAFFIC." The question of trams being held up at the Colombo Street and Lincoln Road crossings through railway traffic wits referred to at yesterday's meeting of tho Christchurch Tramway Board by Mr D. Sykes, who expressed the opinion that the Railway Department was not giving the board a fair deal over the matter. He said that at. the two crossings mentioned, goods traffic was given preference every time. He believed that as far as Lincoln Road was concerned Lhe crossing keeper received a signal when a train left Christchurch and immediately held up the trams, whilst for trains coming into the city he received a signal from Middleton or Papanui. Ho. did not blame the signalmen as lie believed they were only carrying out their instructions. He moved that the Railway Department should be written to and its attention drawn to the unnecessary delays to tram traffic taking place at the Colombo Street and Lincoln Road crossings. These delays, added Mr Sykes, were of daily occurrence. Mr W. J. Walter seconded the motion, which was carried. LETTER, FROM DEPARTMENT. The Railway Department has informed the City Council that the inconvenience to traffic caused as the result of shunting operations over the Colombo Street level crossing is recognised, and that the Department will do everything possible to reduce shunting operations during the busy hours to a minimum. On the motion of Councillor J. K. Archer, tho council decided to draw the Department’s attention to the speed at which trains travel over lhe crossing. Councillor W. IT "Winsor said that there had been no improvement for fifty years- The council should hammer away and get something really done.
