Nominations for all events at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club s winter meeting will close at noon on Wednesday. The well-known Lonsdale Lodge Stables at Riccarton, will he offered at auction next Saturday by Pyne, Gould, Guinness, Limited, on behalf of Mr Claude Piper. The property contains nearly risT acres of ground, on which are a seven-roomed house, together with twenty loose boxes, and all the other buildings necessary for a racing stable. After the Moreton Hack Handicap at Ashburton yesterday, the Judicial Committee held” an inquiry into a complaint bv the owner of Bothina that she had met with some interference on the turn, hut there was no evidence to support the charge, and the committee decided to take no further action. There were two double winners at the Ashburton meeting, Hose Wreath and Battle Scene being successful each day. All their wins were scored very easily. C. Emerson was the most successful jockey riding at the Ashburton meeting. lie- was on three winners, besides being twice second and once third. D. Hall was on two winners and was third three times, while 11. S. Bagby scored two wins, and was one© s*econd. W. Scobie, F. Vnight, J. Board, J. Campbell, A. ltuthven, 35. Ludlow, and T. Metcalf each rode one winner. G. Young was placed four times, and H. Young three times, without a win. ASHBURTON RACES. A SUCCESSFUL MEETING. The autumn meeting of tho Ashburton County Racing Club was concluded y«Nsterda-v,” when tho weather was fine, though the air became a trifle cold late ir. the afternoon. The attendance was again large, there being a much stronger contingent of Christchurch sportsmen than on the first day. Some keen racing was witnessed, several of the finishes being exceptionally close, the judge being kept very busy to separate tlio placed horses in more than one event. The meeting was a big success, from a. racing point of view, while the financial side must have been very pleasing to the club, the totalisator investments for the two days being £'32,804 10s, compared with £23,893 last year. 1 taring opened with tho Second Hurdle Handicap, from which Comt rnent was withdrawn, having developed '.lameness after her win oil the previous day. In a field of seven Gamecock was a little better backed than Whipcord, with Staff Officer third choice, but it was a very poor betting race. Staff Officer was always one of the first lot, and in a desperate finish he iusfc won from Whipcord and Gamecock. Tho winner improved a lot on his effort of the previous day, when he never got out of the ruck. He jumped well yesterday, save at the final obfitnele, at winch he was n trifle lucky. Staff Officer is by Hose Noble from Order, tho dam of Marching Order, and he is likely to improve a lot yet, as he is. only a young horse and a novice at the jumping game. Whipcord ran another solid race, just as he did on the first day. Gamecock, on tho other hand, shaped much better than on tho previous day. At the same time, it was not a smooth performance. Jn the early stages he scorned disinclined to gallop, but five furlongs from homo ho was going well. On reaching the straight lie stopped, but, then appeared to- change his mind again and at the final he was going very fast. J. T. Humphries, who replaced L. Hagerty in the saddle, was sitting still ou him in the run home, but the horse is such a moody customer that probably no other method can be adopted with success. Mandrake was a poor fourth and be never looked like getting near the trio m front-. W ar Tax ran prominently lor a mile but Austin was never near tho leaders. John Barleycorn shaped all right- till bo hit the third hurdle, when h© retired rapidly. A field of fourteen lined up for the Second Hack Welter Handicap. Backus went strongly for the two top weights, Battle Scene and Marauder, the former winding up with £5 more on her than her rival. Brownie, Horatius and demonstrate were the only others to claim much support-. The race did not provide much interest. Battle -Scene got out smartly and soon opened out a gap from Horatius and Immense. On reaching the straight Immense retired, but Battle Scene easily held her place and won as she liked by three lengths from Horatius. while Kerry Star, finishing very fast, was only a length away. Tho performance of Battle Scene, under her b:g weight-, was very meritorious and confirmed tho opinion gained after her first day’s success, that she is a filly of more than useful class. Tf ail goes right with her, Battle Scene will be playing her part well in open sprint races next season. Horatius ran a. decent race and looks certain to do still better lafor on. Kerry Star, a four-year-old by Grafton Lock, put in a great run over tho last furlong, and he may turn out. . useful. Marauder began slowly and though he was showing up three furlongs from home ho ran very wide at the turn and failed to come on. . Brownie, who was third favourite, was never near the front-, hut he may do better before the end of tho surthem circuit. Demonstrate was fairly well supported, but he got out badly and that settled his chance. The withdrawal of Killowen, Macduff and Miss Camouflage left nine competitors for tho Autumn Handicap, the chief event of tho day. Rose Wreath wound up in a little better favour than Clean SweepThere was a hit of delay at the start and when the barrier went up. Rose

"Wreath jumped out in front, with Clean Sweep and Lindon next. Palamon and Kilrush got off badly but Palamon went up very fast, and before two furlongs had been covered, he had taken second place, behind Hose Wreath, who w».s still out clear. A little further on Palamon was replaced by Dutch Courage, who was second into the straight, with Glean Swop next. Rose Wreath held her place to the end, however, and won easily, while in the keen finish, Dutch Courage outstayed Clean Sweep and got second money by a narrow margin. The two performances of Roso Wreath at the meeting made her look a really good mare. Dutch Courage, as on the first day, ran a sterling race, and he should pay his way next season. Clean Sweep ran much better than on the first day, but lie is not racing at the top of his form just now. Castellan was going well at tho turn for home, but ho failed to sustain his run, finishing alongside Linden, a few lengths behind the placed horses. Linden, by the way, has had a hard season, and he may have had enough in tho meantime. Cave Rock began slowly and never got near tho front, while Gossard was outclassed and finished a bad last. Palestrina was withdrawn from the Juvenile Handicap, leaving a field of five. Kilderg was served up a hot favourite, Unio being boat backed among the others. Unio began smartly, followed by Whipping Boy, with Kelderg next. They ran like this to tho straight, where Kilderg headed Whipping Boy, and went after Unio. Kilderg was being ridden hard a little further on, and ho never looked like catching Unio, who finished on well and won decisively by a length, while Whipping Boy was a length and a-half further back. Unio was a hot favourite for the Lagmhor Pinto on the previous day, but he had no chance, after getting a bad start. In yesterday’s race, on the other hand, ho jumped out smartly and was responsible for a very promising performance. He is by Boniform from Margarethe, by Birkenhead from Chant, a member of tho Hammock family, and he will win more races, though he may never reach good class. Kilderg was squarely beaten, but ho was taking on a big order in trying to give the winner over two stone, so that his reputation has not been seriously prejudiced by his defeat- He is a inoro than useful youngster, who should earn plenty of money next season. Whipping Boy ran a decent race behind the other pair, but Dame Fortune failed to stay, while Currasse tailed off from the start. There were more starters for the Which more Welter Handicap, Macduff being a hot favourite, with High Heels, Starlike and Kiideo best backed among tho others. The race was full of interest, which culminated in an exciting finish. Kildee began smartly, but she did not last in front very long, and apparently she is not a good one. Miss Camouflage was always one of the front lot. and she ran to tho front at the end or two furlongs, followed by Benefit Starlike and Kildec. A little funner on Macduff put in an appearance, and racing round the home turn he was just behind Miss Camouflage and Benefit, these three showing tho way to the straight. When fairly in line for home, Benefit retired. The other pair then settled down to a hard struggle, arid just when Miss Camouflage had Macduff’s measure, Stnrlik© da.shed up. It was a very near thing, and only the judge could say definitely that Miss Camouflage had beaten Starlike, while Macduff was only a neck away. Miss Camouflage ran badly at Timaru last month, while her form on the first day of the Ashburton meeting was also moderate, but yesterday she gave an attractive performance. Starlike was unlucky, as she w’ould have won had she begun her run a few strides earlier. Macduff carried his big weight well, and now that he is getting seasoned, ho may land a good stake very soon. High Heels was fancied, but she rail badly, finishing last.

The Melrose Trotting Handicap attracted twenty-one competitors, among them being half a dozen two-year-olds, some of whom will be racing in the Sapling Stakes, on the same tracls, next month. Grey Peter, a stable companion of George tho Fourth, tho first day’s winner, was a good favourite, Betrayer, Red Cross and Ma Cuslila also coming in for strong support. It was not a good race, as the field strung out early. Ma Cushla and Lottie Audubon wore the smartest to begin, but the former got into some trouble before two furlongs had been covered and lost her place, Lottie Audubon going on from Betrayer and Lady Trafalgar- A furlong futlier on Lady Trafalgar was in charge, but she was done with at the entrance to the straight. An interesting finish saw Betrayer outstay Lottie Audubon and win by nearly a length. Gallantry was travelling fast at tho end, and ho put up a good performance to get third- Green Ribbon, Lady Trafalgar and Ma Cushla were next, with tho others straggling in at long intervals. The feature of tho race was the good showing made by the leading pair, a couple of two-year-olds. Betrayer, who is by the imported horse Brent Locanda from an Advance mare, is a well-grown colt, easily the most furnished of the youngsters, and on yesterday's form ho will bo very hard to beat in the Sapling Stakes. Lottie Audubon, by the imported Great Audubon from Silverine, is not such a big one as the winner, but she is a neat filly and a good pacer. She has a fine turn of speed and looks certain to develop into a high-class performer. Ma Cushla, who showed the best form among the others, is by Nelson Bingen from Ma Bell, the dam of Saint’s Bell. She is a speedy pacer and but for meeting with trouble she might have troubled the leading pair. Mr IT. F. Nicoll started a couple of two-year-olds. Pearl Pointer is a sister to Child© Pointer, whom she resembles, though she is built on bigger lines. She failed to show up, nor was her stable mate, Latona ? the sister to Nell Pointer, at all prominent after the first furlong. Irish Beauty, by Harold 3>illcn—Wild Rose, has a private reputation hut she was never near the front. Tho juveniles added interest to tho race and already it is evident that the Sapling Stakes is likely to provide a good contest at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting next month. Three scratchings left a field of eight for tho Moreton Hack Handicap, which was confined to apprentice jockeys. Bonny Mac was a. little better backed than Bothina, th©*.« two carrying more than half the total investments^ The favourites were smartest to begin. and they set such a hot pace that both of them were in trouble in the straight. Bothina was the first beaten and though Bonnv Mae battled on well lie was stopping badly in the last fifty yards, winding up just out of a place. Cnrnbrae was never further back than third end staying on well he just stalled off late challenges from Weird and Demonstrate, both of whom finished very fast. Carnbra© improved a good deal on his effort on the first day, I when ho disappointed his connections, with the result that yesterday’s win came as a bit of a surprise to them. Demonstrate began well, and after being in a handy position all the way be finished with a rattle, suggestive of an early win. A very successful meeting was concluded with the Wakanui Handicap, for which there- were six starters. Killowen, Braid and Jazz all coming in for strong support. The race failed to provide much interest. as Jam jumped out in front, followed by Killowen and Link Up. and they- raced in this orcjyr throughout, j Jazz winning very easily, while Kil-

lowen was several lengths in front of Link Up. The winner is a smart sprinter, who has been galloping well on the Ricc-ar-ton tracks for some time past, and he looks like being very useful next season, though he may never get a distance, Killowen ran a- sound race and Ms form at the meeting wa* very consistent. Link Up just held the place in which she started, and never threatened danger to the pair in front. Braid shaped disappointingly, and Sleepy Head was always in difficulties, while Counter Attack put no heart into his work.
