OBITUARY.
REV ELLIOTT CHAMBERS, The Rev E. Elliott Chambers, Vicar of Sf Saviour’s, Lyttelton, who was in bad health for some time recently, entered Lewisham Hospital on May •>- He died there about 9.30 a.m. to-day. Ho was a son of the Rev J. Chambers. Vicar of Cary, Cornwall, and was born there in 1850- He entered the Navy in 1863, and retired in 1870 with the rank of lieutenant. In 1872.. ho entered Trinity College, Dublin, which he loft in 1875 as Associate of Arts. VI r Chambers arrived in New Zealand in 1881, and was appointed to the charge of Ross, South Westland, then the centre of mining activities. From 1881 to 1885, Mr Chambers was vicar
at Rakaia. He left there to take the position of chaplain to the seamen at Lyttelton. He was also appointed vicar of St Saviours. Lyttelton, and lived in Lyttelton from 1885 until tbpresent time. In his young days, deceased joined the Volunteer Force, became honorary cha phdii to chc N. Battery, and retained that position for many years, earning tho long-service medal. For some years ho was sole chaplain to the Permanent Artillery in the South Island, and acting-chaplain to the Royal Navy. Mr Chambers took an active interest in the affairs of the Canterbury branch of the Navy League. He was a prominent member of the branch, and was a. member of the council.
