VISIT TO GISBORNE. [Per Press Association.! GISBORNE, April 19. Gisborne was en fet© to-day for the visit of tho Governor-General, Lord Jellicoe, who landed from the Tutanekai at 11 a.m. He was formally welcomed by tho Mayor and county chairman in the Botanical Gardens in the presence of several thousand people whom his Excellency addressed. There will be a Navy League thi6 afternoon, and Lord Jellicoe will b© entertained by the Savage Club tonight. To-morrow a native reception and a visit to the country districts will take place. Lord Jellicoe leaves for Tauranga to-morrow night.

SCHOOL COMMITTEES. MEETINGS OF HOUSEHOLDERS. Tho annual meetings of householders for the election of Bchool committees were held last night. WEST CHRISTCHURCH. At West Christchurch there was a good attendance, Dr Chiiton presiding over about sixty householders. The annual report showed that the school was upholding its traditions in scholastic work and in snorts. The new committee is as follows:—Messrs T. J. * Kettle, C. Chilton, G. A. Gyde. A. Hay, J. H. Jones. 11. 11. Lane, J. M’Cullough, J. Middleton and H. S. Whithnn. CASHMERE HILLS. There was a fair attendance of householders at the Cashmere Hills School. The new committee is as followe: —Mesdames Lowry and Couzins, Rev W. Baumher, and Messrs C. E. Wilson, V. W. Keighlev, E. H. Marriner and J. C. Prudoll. Mr Prudell was elected chairman. WEST LYTTELTON. The West Lyttelton householders’ meeting was presided over by Mr W. A. Miller. The following committee was elected. — Messrs F. J. Page (chairman), A. Guy, E. Hoist, D. Deybridge, H. Fletcher. A. Johnson and J. Gow (secretary; RICCARTON. At Riccarton, Mr G. Witty, M.P.. presided over an attendance of forty householders. Resolutions were carried protesting against the small allowance made by the Education Department for incidental purposes, and also against the Education for not endeu :- The new committee is as follows : —Messrs H. fa. Purvis, P. G. Clements. W. G. Woofcton. It. P. Rattray. W. C. Lake, S. Hill, Hight, A. Moore and W. 13. Pratt. EAST CHRISTCHURCH Mr W. O. Harvey presided over a small attendance at East Christchurch. The annual report of the committee mentioned the resignation of Mr A. Peverill, the chairman, and highly eulogised the services he had rendered to the school during the oast twelve years. At the annual examinations the results had been very satisfactory. Tho attendance had increased considerably, the roll number on March IS being 740. as against 706 for the same period last year. The Scott Memorial Prize had been won by Eileen Hulston (girls) and" John Penlington (boys). The attendance at the South Belt School showed a slight increase. The infant school started with a roll number of 380, which at the end of the year wae 381, with Kn average attendance of 306. The balance-sheet showed s. credit balance of £25 7s 9ri. It was reported that a National Scholarship end u Cowie Scholarship had been won bv Jessie Dunbier and a National Scholarship by Eva Brassington. Tho committee was elected as follows: Messrs W. O. Hanrev (chairman), A Allard, J. D. Gray, A. T. Stokes. G. H. Horsfall, C. W. Powell, C. D. W. Eheppard and H. A. Stewart. RICHMOND. At Richmond, Mr 11. Langford presided. The annual report referred to the fact that the school attendance had suffered severely 1 from the epidemic of measles, whooping ! cough and influenza. The average attend- ! ance for the year was 563 and the number on the roll 631. The inspectors’ report on the school was quite satisfactory and stated that the school was being kept up to a creditable standard of efficiency. With regard to the new school site on Led3tain’s estate a definite promise had been given by the Minister of that the procuring of the site would be immediately proceeded with under the Public Works Act. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr D. Sullivan, M.P., for his services rendered regarding the new site. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £3B 7s 9d. The new committee was elected as follows:—Messrs E. C. Brown, J. Burgess. V. fa. Graham, W. J. Holliday, J. "Kearney, S. Pentecost, A. E. Rc-arby, £L S. Ward and F. E. Talbot. Mr W. J. Holliday was elected chairman. ST ALBANS. There was a large attendance at St Albans. Mr A. D. Hassell presided. The annual report stated that the attendance during the year had been rather seriff e roli number for the year was (307 and tnc average attendance 525, compared with 6-27 and 562 respectively for 1919. For full attendance during 1920, 70 first-class certificates and prizes were gained. The balancesheet showed a credit balance of £8 11s 9d on the No. 1 account and £52 Is 5d on the Ac. 2 account. The annual report stated that excellent reports had been received from the various inspectors who visited the school during the year. Tho removal of many families to other districts, and the prevalence of sickness, had materially affected the attendances. The present roll number waa 221. Reference was made to the need for a resident caretaker for the school swimming bath owing to trespassers using and abusing it. The following committee was elected: Messrs W. A. S. Fenner (chairman), W. J. Mulcock, W. 11. Woir, Thomas Bloor, E 8 Streeter, Victor Le Messurier, W. G. Taylor M. E. Bet tel and E. J. Hawkings. A vote of thanks waa accorded the head master and staff and the chairman of the retiring committee (Air Fenner) for their services during the year. At a meeting of the committee subsequently, Mr Fenner was elected chairman and secretary, Mr Bloor treasurer and Messrs. Bloor, Mulcock and the chairman representatives on the School Committees' AssociaSOMERFIELD. There was an attendance of thirty householders at Somerfield, Mr C. W. Rudkin presiding. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £5 10s on the incidental fund account and £165 or. the special ground improvement fq>d. The following committee was elc-cted, no ballot being required:—Mesdames C. M. Taylor, E. S. Good and It. Le Messeurier Messrs A. T. Good, J. M’llroy, W. A. Britton, F. Hutchings, R. Garters and H. Collett. Mr Brittan was elected chairman. Votes of thanks were accorded the retiring chairman CMr "W. Ricketts), the retiring secretary (Mr W. H. Winsor). the committee, head master and staff. REDCLIFFS. At Redcliffs, Mr W. Brittenden presided over a large attendance. The new committee is:—Mira W. H. Woods Messrs A. Holden (chairman), W. H. Etheridge (secretary), S. Thomas, 1. Donaldson, w. Brittendea and E. F. fa and ford. ELMWOOD. Mr A. F. Carey presided at the meeting in the Elmwood School, which was attended by about twenty-five householders. The committee’s report reviewed the eventa of tho year, and stated that the acquisition of a sitf* east of the school was of importance. Many congratulations h*a been received on the beauty of the war memorial. As a result of a concert held on March 11, the oogunittea had decided, if possible, to carry out. a large number of improvements, including tho replacing of the wooden fence on the new site on Leinster Road by a rubble stone wall, and placing the fence on the southern boundary between the new infant playground and Mrs Lattimore’s property; an open-air classroom on the site of the old cottage; a sandpit for infants; asphalting at the eastern side of tho school; attending to tlje floors of the - shelter slied ; improving the appearance of the girls' shelter shed; planting ornamental trees and shrubs; and putting down concret® blocks for the cricket pitch. Tho financial account showed that the receipts for the year had been £917 14s 6d, including a credit balance of £2-42 9« brought forward. The expenditure had been £470 18a, leaving b, credit balance of £446 16s 6d. Mr W. Jones (chairman of the committee) referred to Miss Smith’s services a« head mistress and to tho success of the exhibition, and aid that tho Department’b grants to primary schools were very inadequate. The teachers had worked generously and enthusiastically for the school.

Tho election -at, New Brighton resulted in the return of the following committee: —■ Mesdames Bellamy and Gordon, Messrs F. Ward, J. Buxton, E. A. Langford, H. A. Glasson, A. Bruce and H. E. Gott., and the Rev W. Walker. Mr F. Ward was re-elected chairman, and Mr H. A. Glasson was elected WALTHAM. At Waltham, Mr C. V. Harvey presided over a fair attendance. The following committee was elected:—Mesdames E. A. ‘Milton «nd M Wilson, Messrs A. G. Watkins. R. Hudson, E. A. Gasson, T. S. Mortlock, C. V. Harvey, J. L. Forde and K. Wilson. A hearty vote of thanks waa passed to the head master and the staff for their valuable work during the year. The incoming committee was recomm.ended to write to the Education Department, asking them to supply dual desks. A resolution was passed that the Education Board should be written to. asking them to contribute towards the cost oi school books. The annual report stated that the attendance for the past year showed a slight decline. the present roll number being 682 the average attendance 646, and the average for the year 594. As usual, the inspector’s exI nature, stating that the school had made BELFAST. i At Belfast there was an attendance of ! thirty householders, presided over by Mr W. I P. Spencer. The new committee is:—Mesdames C. Harris and M. Spencer and Messrs , E. Harris, A. Johnston, A. Lawn, W. P. ! Spencer and J. Mussen. Mr Spencer was i elected chairman. ARANT7I. At Aranui, Mr Venner presided over a fair Rttundance. A resolution, urging the Minister of Education to fulfil a promise made by him to encourage education, was oasaed. The new committee is:—Messrs W. H. Phipps (chairman), J. D. Sprosen (secretary), J. Newman and Mesdames White and RowLYTTELTON. At Lyttelton, Mr h. R. Curtis presided over a fair attendance. Tho balance-sheet showed a debit balance °i £ll 13s 3d. The report stated that *ha attendance had been sornewlißt better than in the previous year. Last year’s average was 399, and this year's attendance 421. The secondary department also showed an infollowing resolution was carried: That this meeting of householders request the incoming School Committee and the Borough Council to co-oneratc in the promupetition within the borough, praymg Parliament to order the immediate demolition of the Lyttelton Gaol building, and to hand over the site to the Education Department fpr the use of the Lvttelton District High School as a playground.” A further resolution was passed urging upon the Government the necessity, notwithstanding the present financial stringency, of < *ontinuing tne lull grants for educational purposes. The following committee was elected: Messrs W. T. Foster, W. G. Carson. R. Fenton, A. Arnepon, H. Mills, L. Graham. D. Grubb and E. Gillard, and Dr Upham. Mr M T . G. Carson was elected chairman, and Mr F. Foster secretary. HEATHCOTE. At Heathcote, Mr W. H. Radcliffc presided over an attendance of about fortv. The committee is:—Messrs W. H. Radcliffe (chairman), G. Cummings, C. Smith, Vv. Grazier, T. H. Williams, W. T. Popple and R. W. Shrimp ton. RANGIORA. At Rangiora tbero was en attendance of seventy, presided over by Mr C. I. Jennings. Mr H. A. Archdall, chairman of the outgoing committee, submitted a comprehensive report, showing that the year’s doings in connection with the. school had been highly satisfactory, the only failure being an undertak:ng to provide school books and stationery for the children at a low cost. It was resolved to recommend the. new committee to extend the lunch lecess bv t* quarter of an hour. The new committee is:—Mrs L. J. Harper, and Messrs H. A. Archdall (chairman), W. L. Murray. A. Shank*and, C. D. Gibson, F. 3. Lane, A. Cambridge, W. E. Cockroft end C. W. Tyler. SOUT3BROOK. Tho new committee at Southbrook was elected as follows: —Messrs A. Mackintosh (chairman), S. Jones, J. Yette, R. J. Corbett, «T. Marty n, A. Hislop and C. R. Thwaitos. OPAWA. At Op aw a Mr It. H. Turner presided over a fair attendance. The annual report stated that the number of children on t_ho roll at tho end of December was 398, with an average attendance of 352, which was over 88 per cent of the roll number. Of thirty-sir children who sat for the proficiency examination, only one failed, that being a boy who had attended the school for only four months. Thanks were due to the Rev Williams for the manner in which he had conducted the Bibio cla.se, and to the Young Helpers’ League for their services. The financial report showed a credit balance of £27 2s sd. The honorary secretary, Mr T. W. West, reported that the committee had decided to present a gold medal to Laurie Angus, who made such a gallant attempt to rescue Ronald Yates, who was unfortunately drowned. The medal would be presented at the end of this month or early next month. He would like as many parents as possible to attend the presentation. The drowning showed the necessity for swimming- being taken up energetically. Only about 28 per cent of tho pupils in the upper standards were able to swim. Thanks were due t.o the Onuwa Swimming Club for the assistance thev had given the school in the encouragement of swimThe following committee wa.s elected: — . Messrs R, H. Turner (chairma-rV T. W. Hooper presided over an. attendance of about fifty persons at Woolston. The annual report made complimentary reference to the work of the school during the past twelve months. A strong protest was made regarding the action oi the Education Board in not carrying out the recommendations of the committee concerning necessary repairs to the school. The chairman criticised tht board's apparent apathy, stating that complaints made that the infants’department had been flooded hrtd passed unnoticed In consequence of the board's attitude, he would not seek office this year, nor would some other members of the old committee. Only four pereons would consent to stand for seats on the committee—Mrs Robinson, Rev F. Dunnage and Messrs F. Newton and D. Rowse. Thepe were elected accordingly, and it was decided that those elected should nominate five other householders willing to ao cept office iJ they could be found, t"he names to be sent to the board for approval SYDFVHAM. At Sydenham, Mr E. L. M’Keon presided over an attendance of about 150 persons. Tho annual report Btated that during the past year the school had well maintained its high position amongst the primary schools of Canterbury. The splendid work of tho head master and his staff was deserving of the highest praise. Many noticeable improvements had been made at tho school grounds. Over 15CO square yards of asphalting had been done in the school grounds. The amount expended in the upkeep of the school exceeded the incidental allowance by nearly £IOO, end it was only by the efforts of the school’s 3taff, scholars and the committee that it was possible to provide every requirement of the School and at the «ame time finish with a substantial credit balance. New honours boards had been erected in tho main entrance hall of the new school. The balance-sheet showed receipts amounting to £545 9s 9d. expenditure amounting to £403 14s 4d, leaving a credit balance of £l4l 15s 6d. The following committee was elected:—Rev J. K. Archer, and Messrs J. Butterfield, T H. Butterfield, R. J. Duncan, F. A. Frayle,' H. J. Hoddinott, TV. H. Luxton, E. L. M’Keon and J. H. Pro-tt. Mr E. L. M’Keon was elected chairman. PAPANUI. At Papanui, Mr R. A. Patrick presided over an attendance of about seventy memThe annual report and balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £3l. Some discussion took place over the provision of land allotted to the school, and one househldcr made a comparison with Bligh’s Road School, which, with only 130 children, had seven acres of land, as against two acres held by the Papanui School. It was resolved to write to the Education Board, urging that more provision should be made for land for the school. It was also resolved to ask the Education Board to build part of the schoolroom and make repairs to the building. The following committee was elected: Mesdames Wray and Wood, Messrs W. R. Smith, G. Wray, H. Mehrtens, W. Gandiot d, W. Chapman, G. Wood end R. W. Hawke. Mr W. R. Smith wee re-elected chairman of the committee. ADDINGTON. At Addington, Mr J. Down presided over a small attendance. A resolution was passed I urging the Government to revert to the old system of nomination of members on the night of the election.

Bedford (chairman), R. M’Clelland, F. Westaway, J. Sadler and D. Finlay. REDCLIFFS. There was a good attendance of householders at the Redcliffs meeting, Mr A. Ho den presiding. The annual report wes read and adopted, and the following were elected a new committee:—Mr A. Holden (chairman), Mrs Wcod, and Messrs Etheridge. Brittenden, Sandford, Thomas and A. Donaldson. SUMNER. The following were elected as a committee:—Mrs Fountain Barber, Messrs G. A. Alexander, G. F. Newman, F. H. R. Neville, J. Browne, F. J. Glackin, C. A. Lawson, K. G. Bailey, Rev E. C. W. Powell. At a meeting of the committee held afterwards Mr G. A. Alexander was elected chairman, Mr H. G. Bailey was elected secretary, and Mr J. Browne treasurer. The following were elected "Works Committee:—Messrs Newman, Neville and Lawson ; Vi siting Committee, Mrs Barber and Rev Powell; delegates to_ School Committees’ Association, Messrs Neville, Alexander and Glackin.
