THE DEATH SENTENCE.

TO THU EDITOR. Sir, —Tlie agitation to secure the commutation of the death sentence on Matthews is finding support in strange yuartbrs. It was shown during the trial' that the man held opinions which might be called "'Bolshevik,” and the result is that our local Bolshies and all the tribe connected with them are anxious to save him from his well deserved condemnation. With a remarkable lack of perception, they plead that he is insane. My own opinion is that Matthews showed the real Bolshevik contempt for the life of other people, and that all this fuss and bother is a waste of sympathy on a heartless criminal, lie has no claim to clemency, as his act was one of deliberate murder—l am, etc., PROTECTION.
